A Cozy Game with an Edge

My Little Cafe Nightmare is one of the more unique cozy game experiences / soft-simulation games out there. The Tim Burton inspired "cutesy horror" ghost town, visually pleasing and charismatic character designs and solid sound design that is even functionally integrated into the gameplay already makes for an excellent base, but there is more to this title than one would think!

Gameplay Loop

The base concept of the game is very easy to get into and understand. You wake up in a haunted realm you do not belong to and decide that you may aswell stick around and run the Coffee Shop you just so happened to be in. You do everything from cleaning the Cafe, taking orders, brewing and serving cups of coffee and even the managerial steps behind the scenes, such as keeping your inventory stocked and buying new furniture and equipment.

Customisation and player-curated menus not only personalise this experience, but really bring the simulation to life. The player has ultimate control over serving sizes, prices, flavour combinations and naming conventions, allowing for a varying degree of complexity during service hours. If you for instance possess three menu boards all featuring 4 flavours of coffee, you really gotta think about good names and an optimised workflow to not trip up during service. More flavours equals more combinations to think about, which means that mistakes are made far quicker.

The game is split up into three phases per day:

  • Preparation
  • Service
  • Cleanup

The service phase is the only one during which time actually passes. You have a limited amount of time between 6 to 23 o'clock and will have to manage everything from taking orders, fulfilling them, on the fly restockings, managing deliveries, the list goes on. Many times customers waltz into an already hectic service. Many seats are already taken, dirty cups are lined up at your sink that still need a handwashing, many of your ghastly customers spilled liquids all over the floor and you still have to take the trash out to not litter your used coffee filters on the floor everywhere, and dang it, you ran out of coffee beans! During service this game offers a real challenge, one that is fun to survive and to eventually optimise away with new upgrades to equip your work area with.

While the game comes with three difficulties, the biggest challenges are created through a lack of management and bad decisionmaking. For instance our nightmare scenario could have been mitigated if we made sure to clean up at the end of the last day and properly prepared the work area in the morning. The cool thing is, Everything about your Cafe is customisable, to the point where every shelf, every light, every table, chair, counter, bean bag, filter, anything in the game really can be repositioned. The game even has a very welcome quality of life feature, which allows the player to pick up an entire counter that has been fully decorated without needing to remove the placed items from the surface, making decoration a fun endeavor without much hassle.

Assuming you positioned your kettles, coffee mixers, ground coffee bags and whatever else you need in comfortable spots, ground a bunch of coffee before service, cleaned everything up, and made your online orders in time to arrive before peak hours, your service phase may end up being more of a breeze! But be careful because there are more dangers that could really sink your business!

Metagames

Persistent elements that can be felt throughout all gameplay phases have to do with finances, a demonic possession, customer satisfaction, a level up based progression system and the anti-savescum nature of the game.

Money is important, even in a ghost town. If you do not research your prices and undervalue your drinks, you may not survive the upkeep costs and sink into debt. If you are eyeing that expensive dishwasher that will make your life so much easier but don't have enough money to pay for it, you can buy it anyways, yet you will take on debt which you need to pay off (by the way, upkeep costs increase with your dishwasher purchase too!). If you overprice your drinks your customers will loudly complain, will not tip and your cafe's rating will drop. (this is a European ghost town where tips are not mandatory mind you!) You need to get a sense for the financial game to be able to upscale your business and grow enough to safely purchase new gear, while being able to restock inventory and account for cups that customers take home with them.

Speaking of customers, how satisfied they are with your service depends on multiple metrics, which are speed of service, cleanliness, decor, prices and selection of flavours. Customers can even walk out of the cafe if you take too long in fulfilling your order, or walk out with the cup you paid for in hand because of lacking seating opportunities. This also is why you need to swing your broom from time to time during service when spills happen, you really want your customers to be satisfied.

Let's say they are and the business is doing well. After a few days you gained enough experience to get a Level up. Now you unlock more decor, flavours and items that can make your life easier! The upgrades over time make you really want to work towards a neater, prettier, more functional Cafe that you can be proud of and what was surprising for me, was that you can even repaint all the walls, get completely different themes for your furniture and even get to EXPAND THE CAFE into a LARGER CAFE! Delightful!

All of these things are accompanied by a demonic entity, one that can unfortunately curse you and impose maluses during service hours. Say, deliveries come later, or most annoyingly, customers only buy the cheapest product! The lucky thing is though that our demon is a gambler, and rolls dice which decide your fate, which means that at times you are blessed with a neat bonus. So maybe he is not all bad! This happens after you wrap up your day and go to sleep. That is the only time you can save the game, and you get to review your turnover and experience points gathered before having to roll the dice for the next day.

Concluding

This game a true indie gem! It features a very well thought out gameplay loop, charismatic guests (I love the ghosts with the pointy ears and the new witches) and most importantly for a cozy game, an edge.

The game strikes a pleasant balance between simulation and simplicity. It lets you breathe but during service demands you to pay attention and optimise your gameplay. It isn't heavy on the managerial side, but the game will punish you for misappropriating funds, over or under pricing your flavours and not ordering and preparing your supplies in time, and if all that really is too much for you, you can dial the difficulty back to the lowest difficulty setting, and you can just enjoy your Cafe without too much of a challenge.

Cool thing is, this game has a demo! Just try it out for yourself a bit and see how you like it. One thing is for sure, 8,33€ is a modest and fair price for the enjoyment you will get out of the experience and I highly suggest you buy it!

As a plus, the game runs perfectly on Linux using Proton 8.0 and up and I experienced very little bugs, which likely have already been fixed by the time you buy the 1.0 release. Have fun managing your Cafe!

When it comes to the game content itself, the Remaster is rather faithful to the original Oblivion! It spruces up the visuals of the game quite a lot and the underlying logic of the game and things like item placements in the world, seem to be handled over the old Gamebryo engine, as when comparing both the vanilla and remaster versions to each other the item placements and the like seem to be identical. The game aside from the visual additions also significantly altered the audio of Oblivion. Voicelines are much clearer and the sounds within the gameworld are presented much more realistically, with sound muffling when turning corners and reverberation being added in cavernous environments.

The only issue with the game is performance and the reliance on frame generation and DLSS/FSR for acceptable gameplay in the overworld. For interiors the game runs significantly better for the most part, but you still got microstutters everywhere, hitches, and generally terrible performance. I possess a 4060Ti, 32GB of RAM and a Ryzen 7 3700X and I struggle getting good frames in the overworld on low/medium settings, with FSR Quality and Framegeneration on. I play the game on Pop OS Linux and updated my NVIDIA driver, the latter of which improving performance quite a bit but not to a very satisfactory degree, and soon I will likely update this review and report on Windows 11 performance, yet I am not very optimistic right now.

There are avenues to improve performance! On Nexus mods a rather popular engine.ini configuration helped a lot in improving input lag and stutters and I think it would be a good thing to try if you run into performance issues. Another way of significantly boosting performance is disabling Lumen Software RT, which is only really worth it if you have terrible specs or care about performance over anything else. I wouldn't recommend this one as many ugly artefacts are added to the game when disabling Lumen, but you know what is best for you, do what you want I'm not your dad. I hope. Another thing is closing your browsers and disabling hardware acceleration on some of the programs you use beside the game. Could be a Linux thing, but running Steam itself in HW accelerated mode for instance does have a performance impact for me.

In interiors, dungeons and Oblivion gates, the game runs pretty well actually! (with DLSS and Framegen of course) Yet still stutters can be expected, especially in cities.

Overall, I believe that the original game may be a better purchase for someone new to Oblivion, unless you have a console and gamepass or something. it is cheaper, runs on anything and in my opinion the old graphical style lends itself quite well to the whimsical style of Oblivion. If you prefer the Remaster, go for it, but if you have a mid range PC you may struggle more than its worth. I would say wait for performance patches before making a purchase and try out the vanilla game first. If you dislike Oblivion, you will dislike the Remaster after all!

I did not play the game much, however all I can say is that it sadly fell victim to modern optimisation trends that are making games look ever more smeary and disgusting.

The game seemingly was optimised primarily for DLSS and Temporal Anti Aliasing, without DLSS the game runs significantly worse and is very stuttery and to add insult to injury all objects are aliased to ♥♥♥♥ featuring an ungodly amount of stairstepping and sparkling. If DLSS/TAA is enabled, the game is in vaseline vision and stuff just warps around objects constantly. Not sure if this stuff is ever gonna get fixed. The game itself seems to be fine from my limited playtime, but the lacking performance and vomit visuals in this game really degrade the experience. Unironically, Call of Pripyat is a more visually pleasing game due to it's consistency alone and the ability to use anti aliasing methods that are not temporal.

Please work on adding proper anti aliasing, please sort out performance. Please.

EDIT:

After messing around with settings and INI configs the game still is a mess on my 4060 Ti. Especially when entering cities the frames drop way below 60. Hope that performance mods that actually help out lower end systems will be made soon. The minimum recommended specs are criminal, there is no way a player with a 1060 can run this game

I cant believe this actually released!

I played for about 11 hours so far. I experienced a chunk of the story and a bit of Arena game play and I gotta say that I really enjoy the game so far.

So first off, let's talk game play!

As far as melee combat goes, the player can attack, use heavy attacks, charge up a deadly but easily punishable swing and also kick opponents which makes them ragdoll to the ground or potentially fall to their deaths over a ledge. Blocking melee hits is possible by accurately timing the hit with the right mouse button. Shooting is of course also possible, but every weapon has a certain sweet spot range the player should account for. You can still hit an opponent outside of the sweet spot, but hits might not be as accurate or deadly. Dual wielding also is possible!

The game highly depends on the player constantly swapping out guns and melee weapons. Melee weapons have a limited durability and ranged weapons only have limited ammunition, so just like in the old Project Nexus flash game, you HAVE to swap weapons, it's integral to the experience.

Movement also is very reminiscent of the flash game. You can walk, sprint and dodge and depending on the skill of any given character the speed of sprinting and dodging may vary, especially when it comes to the Arena mode. Combat overall has some issues, especially when it comes to picking up items and some weird hit detection. Golems (the big guys) especially might sometimes grab you even though it seems like they shouldn't or how to defeat certain enemies can be a bit of a mystifying experience. If they are completely armoured up for instance you have to first melee attack the golem to expose it's head, then you can shoot it with your ranged weaponry or continue angering it until you can perform a takedown attack.

Visibility also can be a big problem if you have the bodies and decals cranked up to the maximum. The game on top of that also suffers from a little telegraphing problem. I have encountered some moments where I was continuously fighting hordes of enemies or a specific boss without realizing what the game actually wanted me to do to progress. Maybe this was intentional since these moments pop up from time to time, but I think the goals could have been visualized a bit better.

Overall I would say that the gameplay is very much enjoyable! I like the simple but great feeling combat, especially due to being able to gib enemies and the excellent sound design the game possesses. The music is top notch, the voice acting there is is great and the sound effects and ambience are excellent. I cannot complain when it comes to sounds.

The visuals of Madness have been translated competently from 2D to 3D. Combat animations and the overall appearance of the characters is faithful to the original animations and flash game adaptations. The game is downright beautiful at times... and seeing the little iconic Newgrounds styled angry faces at times brought a smile on my face!

The game is split up into two modes, Story and Arena.

The Story mode puts the player into the shoes of Hank, Deimos and Sanford and the player is funneled through a linear action experience. The characters have some specializations and shortcomings, for instance Hank and Sanford cannot hack computer terminals, but Deimos and a later playable character can. But those differences only amount to the player needing to switch characters for a second to fulfill a certain task. I like the story so far! It delivers quite a bit of fan service by what characters you get to meet and even play, and the game also escalates in difficulty over time. On the Normal difficulty it never gets frustratingly difficult, nor brain numbingly easy. I think the devs found a great sweet spot in the Normal difficulty. I tried out hard here and there and it was far more of a challenge, but mileage may vary!

Missions are connected through little hub worlds. They are nothing amazing, but they serve their purpose well for being the connective tissue between missions. It also brings a sense of scale and purpose to the environments and the hub worlds are never too big for their own good, at least so far they aren't!

The Arena Mode in my opinion is the star of the game. You start off as some guy who may or may not have some pre-assigned skills you can pick from. The Arena mode isn't as simple as it was in the flash game prequel however! It features a campaign of it's own ranging from contracts, to various different arenas to play in and your very own Headquarters you get to upgrade and build over time.

Playing the arena mode can be incredibly difficult, because it is supposed to be difficult. The way this mode works is that the player constantly fights waves of enemies until the player hits a brick wall and realizes that gearing up and leveling up is necessary. Then you repeat the process indefinitely. If you liked the flash game, or any kind of arena based experience, you will enjoy the arena game mode. Otherwise I really don't know what you would expect out of this mode or why you even bought the game in the first place.

The leveling system has been completely overhauled since the flash game days. You gain experience for various skills as you use them, resulting in many different XP pools which are all independent of each other. You level by selecting a skill and expending a certain amount of Experience points to learn the skill. After acquiring the skill you are prompted to invest into one of two ability upgrades, which will be different depending on what skill you learned.

Buying gear is of course also possible and you can outfit yourself and your squad mates however you like. The buying menu is a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get used to the big list of items it is easy to navigate, especially if you decide to use the filters the game offers you.

Squadmates can be hired through one of your companions in the headquarters. Squadmates can die in battle but can be fixed up for a price by the medic. Dying as the main character doesn't cost you money once resurrected but you will not gain any experience points or monetary rewards from the last wave you played. Waves are reset once you die but you can also choose to skip waves if you do not want to replay them by paying a fee. Money is rather abundant so skipping waves should be a more than viable option.

Finally if you ever don't know what to do next in the Arena mode, use the help terminal in the Head Quarters! It does dispense actual help for a totally lost player!

Final Thoughts

Damn, so far so good! I love the general game play of Project Nexus. There are issues which a few negative reviews and myself brought up, but I would not classify the game as a janky experience or an abundantly flawed one. I also want to publicly commend Gibbing Tree for how they handled the release of this game and the Early Access model they used. Marketing was basically null. They made sure that only hardcore fans got their hands on an alpha key through livestreams a Kickstarter campaign and purchasable keys they offered on their website for a limited time. Some people complain about how long the game took to develop, but I think that is an unfair complaint to issue. Gibbing Tree made sure that the ones that paid got an early copy. They did not market the game outside of their campaign. They put the time in to finish a 1.0 release instead of opting for Steam Early Access which would have made it possible to release the game 4 years ago, but might have resulted in a development hell. Let us also not forget that this is the first commercial game the ex Newgrounds team ever worked on. Project Nexus already is a great game on its own, but considering that this is the first game they put out there for sale... and it doesn't suck... that is admirable!

Try out the game and judge for yourself! Refunds are possible after all. Have fun!

DEATHLOOP REFUNDED

I played the game for about 2 hours and I have to say that it isn't what I expected... but somehow it kind of is.

The game lags like hell due to Arkane choosing to go for the Void Engine. The game also is clearly built upon Dishonored 2 in many respects. It controls like Dishonored, and feels like it too and I enjoyed that for once we can have a Dishonored like experience just without the Blink ability...

but...

The enemies are absolutely retarded. Their field of vision is too low, they don't care to look up vertically just like in previous Arkane games and they do not really react to you sprinting around and jumping. The moment I killed 5 enemies while sprinting around and mashing F I immediately quit the game and requested a refund. I will get back to playing Dishonored 2 now.

Soooo, I decided to refund the game.

This maybe is not a game problem but a me problem. Let me list off what I enjoyed about the limited experience I had with it:

>visuals are pretty decent
>the movement feels pretty good
>voice acting was nice for the most part
>really good sound design
>it seems like the price the game is sold at is adequate to the scope and production quality the game offers

Here is why I decided to refund the game:

The game seems to not have a feeling of consequence. The encounters with the monster I had so far were incredibly scripted and the game did not manage to create an illusion of intelligence for the creature that is chasing the player. Again, this might just be me, but I cannot take this game seriously if the monster only appears at set times here and there. The Dark Descent also had this problem for me, but in that game you could at least die.

Yes, you cannot really die in Rebirth! If the monster picks you up, all it does is scream at you and drag you off somewhere. Being in the dark too long does not affect you really. All it does is flash images with loud sounds in your face. Very scary! Not really. At least not for me. The game play has been simplified by removing the health gauge completely and I think even Laudanum is useless or non existent. The game seems to be primed for a "story first" experience, with the main character constantly remarking about things that are going on around her, the player being hit with a TRUCKLOAD of exposition flashbacks and notes to read which I ended up skipping altogether and making game play easier by simplifying the tinderbox mechanics and making the lantern/matches nigh useless for most environments.

If you want to buy this game, switch your brain off. Don't think about the mechanisms of the AI present in the game and treat Amnesia like a nice interactive horror movie with puzzle sequences. It might just be for you, but it sure as hell isn't for me.

Other small problems included some unpolished areas Frictional Games did not expect the player to explore, like right behind the airplane crash site. You can spot a lot of floating rocks/ transparencies there. Other than that, prop surfing is possible by spamming jump and the left mouse button.

Also, I tried killing the baby by actively jumping down from greater heights again and again. I could not. Why is the "check babies health" mechanic then a thing? Maybe I did not play enough to fully explore the mechanic

Even though alot of FPS games exist nowadays which have alot more technical complexity and graphical quality, my personal favourites in the first person shooter genre, are definatly Doom and Doom 2.

1. Graphics and Level Design:
Doom was always really limited when it comes to level design. The whole game was constructed as a top down shooter, but rendered in the first person perspective with the Doom engine, which caused some notable problems. The biggest problem though was that you couldn't build a room on top of another room. Even with this limit, the levels are really well made and have a really good flow, especially with the asymmetrical level design at hand.

The graphics are simply put timeless, yes the textures aren't HD and everything else consists of pixel sprites, but really, the game in itself is really appealing.

2. Sounddesign:
The sounddesign is spot on. The weapons feel powerful and satisfying, the enemies sound frightening and quite unique and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ music is fantastic.

3. Gameplay:
Doom has a quite simple premise, shoot demons and collect keycards to proceed to unknown areas of the map, all the way to the end. Doom in itself is a really simple game, but the shooting and movement in itself is fantastic. Memorizing attack patterns, switching weapons mid- fight, watching Doom Guy gritting his teeth while shooting hordes of demonspawn, is extremely satisfying.

4. Mods:
Mods enshured the games longevity and the community is extremely creative when it comes to mods. Source ports, graphics enhancements, gameplay mods, violence mods, map packs and much more are available for free on the internet for other people to download and enjoy. Why buy an expensive AAA game, when you can get Doom 1 and 2 for a cheap price and mod support?

I think everyone should try out Doom. These games truely stood the test of time and shine even today. Everyone can get this game running by just downloading a source port and I would totally recommend it.
