Overprime is a MOBA made using the assets of now defunct Epic Games MOBA Paragon. To really understand why some people have an issue with this, I'll need to talk about the 2 key reasons why Paragon failed.
1. The game was too similar to Smite.
and 2. The game had no staying power.
Both issues were from a fear on Epic Games' part that a MOBA more reliant on third person action elements, verticality, and kills would do poorly in a market of more hardcore MOBA gamers and more casual gamers alike. While they weren't entirely wrong with this (the vast majority of people I know that play Smite and LoL as their main games are incapable of playing other games) it lead them to making a game with no real identity, and they pulled out the second they saw an opportunity.
Ok, so what? After Epic released the assets for free someone will just make a reboot, it'll get a very very small community, lose all support within a year, and people will find some new scapegoat, that's how these things work.
The problem is that a good game was made from the assets, too.
Overprime is NOT Paragon. Obviously. I just called it good. Overprime is a MOBA with heavy third person action gameplay, verticality, and a focus on kills. A lot of the people who are upset with the game seem to misunderstand what's going on here. Netmarble isn't trying to spend a million dollars on a reboot of a failed game, they're trying to make a new game using the themes, assets, tone, and general genre that actually keeps players engaged and entertained.
Unfortunately, fans of bad games want their game to stay bad. I should know, i like Touhou. Many fans of Paragon have taken the changes made to the game as a personal attack, and decided to look poorly on Overprime. Also unfortunately, fans of bad games tend to know they're wrong, so instead of actually playing the game to find problems, they use disingenuous arguments, like claiming the privacy policy is "the worst in gaming" (Acti-Bliz getting away scott free as always) or claiming that having a pay-for currency in a F2P game is wrong (because having 80% of the characters in free rotation, 5 free character, and being able to buy a new character every 10-ish hours, better than LoL or Smite, is "P2W") and claiming the balance is terrible (despite playing 3 games and losing all three after turret diving 10 times).
Obviously if you think Paragon was killed solely because the creators of the game are evil and Fortnite is the anti-christ, be my guest and go play Predecessor, but from my point of view, one of the games IS a failure and costs 10 dollars, and the other is an unknown element that's free.
(Final note, I would recommend trying out Pred and refunding if you don't like, but they set-up the steam page using bundles, so you can't refund it. Weird, right?)
