Doesn't overstay it's welcome, almost made me spit take a couple of times, holds up incredibly well after 15 years. Only nit-picks here in 2026 are the incredibly frequent loading screens, and the at times unusual 3D audio placement. On modern hardware though the loading screens are barely long enough to itch your nose, and the 3D audio placement while a bit weird at times, is not going to hinder the enjoyment of what is an otherwise perfect puzzle adventure.

This game proved once and for all that it's not puzzles in video games that I hate, it's bad puzzles. I was iffy on even trying this given my usual aversion to puzzles for puzzles' sake, but this was outstanding. Just challenging enough without ever doing any of the usual "wtf" moments that the point and click genre is a bit renowned for. This port however is rough, changing graphics settings was like running a gauntlet because being in that menu too long would just crash my game.

You can really tell when you're playing a game that was the designer's magnum opus. You can really REALLY tell when you're playing a game where 1 designer has combined 10 different ideas that would represent career defining masterpieces for 10 different designers, into one game. The way in which different mechanics in Mewgenics interact makes it instantly addictive. Meta progression is slow, but not in a way that feels unsatisfying or sluggish. Unlike a lot of roguelike games where I feel compelled to keep striking the iron while it's hot, I can see this being one I come back to again and again, making cumulative progress without feeling lost from the progression of previous playthroughs.

Hard not to recommend such a classic, pretty much created a genre in and of itself. One of my favourite "laptop" games, good to fill half an hour and runs on just about anything.

Bit of a rough start for this one, Spin Hero misses much of the flashy animations and number-go-up compared to others in this genre, making it a bit difficult at first to fully understand which modifiers are applying and what items are stacking. There are however not really that many weapon types or items in the game, so it quickly becomes familiar, at which point there is a good game under the hood. This feels like it was maybe one more UI pass away from being a top seller. While this is a good game with a somewhat novel mechanic, I would only recommend this if you're a big fan of the number-go-up roguelike genre and are looking to try something new. Otherwise, there are undoubtedly much more interesting, addicting, and innovative options available.

One of the earliest Civilization titles you could play without a tutorial if you've played more recent editions. They really nailed some of the satisfaction that drives that "One more turn..." feeling. Specifically the way your civilization evolves through the improvement of tiles and managing your workers, the visual representation of the wonders around your city. The irony is that despite considerably more complex mechanics, the later games sometimes struggle to get the emergent depth that this game generates through that turn by turn satisfying iteration.

Ultimately, this is the popcorn movie equivalent in games. If I had to guess, the team behind it had a lot of very interesting ideas that they heavily committed to, well before any play testing was done to see what does and doesn't work. The result is a game with a lot of mechanics that interact with each other in ways that sound really interesting, but the game never incentivises interacting with. There are damage types, there are enemy weak spots, there are guns with very unique effects. However, every enemy is just a damage sponge that even on higher difficulties, will struggle to kill you so long as you don't fall sleep mid-combat. Difficulty both in terms of what you choose, and the varying difficulty of mobs within the world, translates only to an increased time to kill.

Once you realise all this, the only thing keeping you around is the story. Blissfully, it's an enjoyable one. The motivations of groups and characters can be a bit vacuous here and there, but given the parody and whimsy of the games humour, it gets away with being incongruent here and there. Know going into this game that there are sections where you might as well be playing a visual novel, and combat is very much not a skill check or challenge at any point. If you don't mind that, give it a try.

Outstanding mix of puzzle and strategy, with a narrative that keeps you hooked, but doesn't get too high off its own supply. The characterisation of the key players is excellent, and the game features a ribbons-on-maps mechanic that makes it almost impossible to lose track of everyone's interests or motivations.

I do feel slightly sorry for this game however. The sarcastic humour endemic to every piece of late 2010s media has made it a very tired trope by 2024. This game actually uses it in ways that make sense and is consistent with the world they're building. It does come off as a little cringe at times, but I think that's mostly because of all the bad applications of this style of writing we've seen for the last decade giving me red flags where they're not needed.

Visually beautiful upgrade to a classic series of games, all the usual fun of puzzles, comedy, and most of all collecting studs. Unfortunately the camera is very close to your character when using 16:9 display, and the games automatic camera movement is pretty awful. This combined with no FOV options or camera zoom preferences makes it an instant motion sickness trigger. I see many reviews with a similar story. It's something I'd have never considered for a game in this genre but unfortunately unplayable for me in this state.

Exceptionally refreshing to play a game in this genre that takes itself seriously. While there's no shortage of tycoon management games, they usually come with a coat of goofy and whacky vibes designed to make them appeal to a more broad demographic. Even when mechanically identical, it loses something like that. There's nothing especially that stands out about Project Hospital, it just takes the simple concepts of a tycoon management game, does them well, then puts a medical coat of paint on them without the silly factor.

EDIT: Oh also, they went unnecessarily hard with the soundtrack.
