The games good, don't get me wrong, but its a hard one to recommend.

The atmosphere is amazing, the platforming is excellent, and the music and art is just beautiful.

The problem is that the combat is really just mediocre, and the game is extremely packed with combat. You can't go one area without running into a boss or two, or a sealed room with waves of enemies. And when the game is constantly asking you to interact with the weakest portion of the game, it just gets really old fast.

For the combat fiends out there it may be a GOTY contender, but for me, it just makes me appreciate how comparatively short and combat sparse some other metroidvanias are.

Amazing shmup, and an excellent first game for any newcomers who may be interested in getting into the genre.

The stages are excellent, the boss fights are great, the music is amazing, and the game is full of references for long time fans of the genre.

I simply cannot recommend this game enough.

This is a difficult expansion to place. At times like this, I wish Steam had a "Mixed Recommendation" option, because this is truly a mixed bag. Given that, I will have to give it a "Not Recommend", if only because "Mixed overall" perfectly describes it.

Story:
The story is rough, like, it's really rough. We spend so much time focused on one character (Wuk Lamat), that it detracts from other interesting stories that could have been told. Krile and Erenville aught to have been given as much screen time, since their stories are really the emotional core of the last chunk of the MSQ. Even if you like her at first, by the end you will be thinking, "Why did she just show up out of nowhere to say 3 minutes of dialogue, can't we let the other characters breath a little?"

Gameplay:
On the other hand, we have the battle content. No lie, the dungeons, trials, extremes, they're all the best the game has ever seen. They are exceptional. Actual 10/10 content. Yet you must push through the main story to even access this content.

Overall:
Other games, like the Bayonetta series, can get away with a bad story, because the story is just a little cutscene here and there, while the amazing gameplay is ever-present. In this game, the balance is the exact opposite, with hours of cutscenes and dialogue between each action input. This, unfortunately, does not allow the amazing gameplay to carry this expansion. Previous expansions had engaging stories to carry player interest through the MSQ, this one does not.

I will probably edit this review to a Recommend at some point, either when the patch content starts to roll out, or if the reviews dip below 50%. It isn't a wholly negative experience, but the positives at this point just can't carry the negatives. Mixed is exactly an overall review score that fits. I look forward to seeing what they have planned for the raids and alliance raids.

An extremely deep experience that may put off fans of the new games. This game requires a great knowledge of strategy, and the techniques to properly build your civilization into a prospering empire. Still one of the best in genre, and a must play for fans of any type of Civ game!
