I gave this game a shot ~3 years ago, couldn't get past the first boss, called it a trash game, uninstalled and forgot about it. I decided to pick it up again this year because Nioh 3 got released and i wanted to give the series another shot. I already had this one so i figured it would at least be a nice distraction while i wait for the new one's price to drop a bit.

This time it clicked. I went in expecting bargain bin Dark Souls and it is a different game than what i had in mind. I was able to get out of that roll-hit-roll-hit mindset and the game became much more enjoyable and it opened up quite a bit after i began to kind of understand how it wanted to be played. I ended up binging this game, jumping on it every time i had a bit of free time. Finished the main story and some side quests in ~46 hours.

The game is still a souls-like, which i love and it is very dynamic with a lot of freedom around builds, spells and such allowing you to find the playstyle that fits you. I chose an axe because big bonk. I can see myself replaying it sometime in the future and trying the other weapons. I saw someone online saying that the game feels less like Dark Souls and more like Diablo after you get used to it and i can see that. I got that neural activation unga bunga hit me too while looting items and sorting through them to see which ones had the biggest numbers or best effects.

Bosses are unique; story is good enough (though i don't have enough japanese history knowledge to really appreciate it i guess), progression seems fine, the maps don't drag on for too long and there are decent ways to cheese your way through frustrating encounters, so i didn't get TOO exhausted trying to finish the game. The DLC is a big step up in difficulty, i got drained of energy very quickly and i just gave up while i was having fun. I'll move on to Nioh 2 but i'm so glad i gave this game another shot.

Would definitely recommend.
