Disclaimer

First things first: despite the tags and what it may seem like from the screenshots, the game is not of an erotic nature so don't get your hopes up or expect a patch to unlock extra 'content' and stuff. Though I personally think it could have been nice, the game in itself has more than enough substance to stand on it's own.

As for my personal review and impression of the game over 3 hours in, I'll be trying a different format for a change.

Story
[~] It's very straightforward if not a bit on the simplistic or generic side.

One can argue that with only two of the eight or so story levels finished, it may be a bit of an early assumption. But considering the premise and overall dialogue of the characters and quests you go through, I think it's only a fair thing to assume. However that said, this isn't a game you should be playing if you desire a well-crafted story so I would think it hardly matters anyway.

Combat
[+] Combat is action-packed and the controls feel pretty tight on the mouse and keyboard.

The game may start out deceptively easy but it can get pretty tough through some of mechanics it brings up. Using your melee weapon for instance can feel a bit counter-intuitive at first as you may want to chain combos and wreak havoc, but the stamina system puts a heavy restriction on that so you actually need to find a good pacing to not find yourself in a predicament when you need the energy to dodge an attack. Eventually you level up and can get mods or gear to make it less of an issue, but the mechanic still remains.

It's very wise to learn the perfect dodge early on cause the time-slow will be very helpful if not almost necessary as you progress through some of the later levels. Aside from unique mods there doesn't seem to be any healing or recovery so you either have to endure till the next 'save zone' or backtrack to your previous if you want to heal up. Though it does add a fair sense of difficulty, there are some mob spawns that may feel cheap; which of course reset after resting at a save zone.

Miscellaneous Gameplay
[+] Collectibles and a plethora of loot to gather and hoard making killing and exploring feel more rewarding.

There's different weapon types for each equipment slot and a bunch of randomised mods to tweak them with that can have quite unique effects. It makes way for some very interesting builds depending on your personal preference and play-style (e.g. a high crit chance sniper stacked with crit dmge mods.. or a shotgun or even katana with mods that spawn grenades to harass distant mobs with).

[-] Moving around the map can be a bit finicky on certain spots where your character gets stuck in an animation.

Personally I don't consider it too much of a deal and it could be expected on something like a spinning cogwheel, but it's still something to at least take note of. Other than that, traversing around the map is easy as you get a mini-map with all points of interests laid out for you. You can warp from one save zone to any others which is nice cause it has a bit of 'metroidvania' where you might need to backtrack to some areas to get that special item you couldn't get earlier.

Sound
[+] The music in some of the scenes is super hype and pumping.

This gets balanced out by how it may sound a bit 'all over the place' with some of the sudden transitions that can feel odd at certain times. Like going into a scene where you pick up a quest object like a dress and suddenly the music goes from atmospheric BGM to the 'Vampire Rave' from Blade. It's amusing if nothing else, though I wish some of these tracks played during combat instead. But overall it sounds pretty stellar to say the least.

[~] Sound effects are nothing too special, typical sounds you would expect to fit for the combat in this game.

Visuals

Not much to say here, one can make their own fair assessment based on the screenshots on the store page. It's 'animu' in a standard post-apocalyptic 3D looking world. The cutscenes do have a certain style to them that is a bit reminiscent of games like Danganronpa. Some 'ecchi' and fan-service here and there but nothing too explicit from what I've seen so far; implications at best.

Last Words

There are certain spawn zones or battles that may feel a bit cheap if not unfair. Consider it difficulty if you want, but a battle like the boss of the second map may take a bit of trial and error. Which is all fair until you consider some of his moves feel super cheap with how sudden or jittery the animations or attacks are. It does however give you a sense of accomplishment when you finally do overcome it so take that for what it's worth. But I do reckon it gets even harder on higher levels especially on the hard difficulty.

In conclusion I'd say it's a good solid game that could provide enough hours of fun and content to justify it's price. But from my personal perspective I would probably price it at around 15 or 10-ish which is roughly what I picked it up for. Maybe if it came with a downloadable/separate OST I could have more happily valued it at it's full price.

Be Dead or Be School out of a solid 10.
