Let's get it straight: I like NG3RE. I like it a lot. But the more I like it, the more I feel being let down by Team Ninja/Tecmo. The basic combat system in 3RE feels very fluent and slick; I dare to say it's even better than 2. However many enemy designs here are just downright terrible, making them dull or frustrating to fight, such as the spider tank boss against whom you just attack once or twice, dodge and repeat, and mage enemies wearing costumes taken directly from Assassin's Creed with infinitely respawning guards that you have to break first in order to deal damage while they spam magics that can trace you pretty well.... Also Team Ninja never seems to learn that readability MATTERS. Why did they choose red as the warning color to glow on enemies' hands when they are about to initiate a grab attack, when there are tonnes of blood splashing all over the place already? Many special effects leave me an impression that their existence is solely for making it harder for you to absorb information efficiently. The story is garbage. I thought 1's story was mediocre("totally accecptable it's an action game after all right") and 2's couldn't get any more disastrous("at least Genshin looks really cool and fitting to the overall character designs"), I was wrong. I don't want to talk about art design choices at all because it's hopeless enough to make me cry.
These small stuff are not game breaking, but really make it impossible for me to fully enjoy the experience. I still like the game, but...god what a huge waste of potential.

PS: Wait only 48.4% of the players owning this game have EVER used Iizuna Drop????? That's less than half?!?? Seriously??????

Update: after playing OG NGII on Xbox @ MN for a while, I'm now confident to say that with FiendBusa's Black mod installed this would become the DEFINITIVE version of Ninja Gaiden II. I would highly recommend you buying Master Collection(when they are on sale, don't gift Tecmo money the dont f**king deserve lmao) now, especially if you don't own an Xbox already(I bought a secondhand one before that mod came out and this poor Xbox will probably be used exclusively for NGB and DOA4 after I finish 1 MN run in NGII lol).
///

Now NG2SB mod is very near completion, MC is overall worthwhile when on sale if you don't own an Xbox.

Check out the mod here, remember to thank FiendBusa:

///////////////////////////Original:

FUN. AS. HELL.

Context: I've finished NG1S in normal. And I've only played NGS2 with Fiend Busa's NGS2Black mod installed, didn't bothered with unmodded NG2 Sigma.

NG2 is way more dynamic and intense than NG1. Enemy count is a lot higher and their attack pattern is denser(Ryu surely received corresponding buffs too). This makes 2 a genuine struggle to survive: everyone wants Ryu dead even at the cost of their lives, so the player has to also spare no effort to kill every single enemy faster than they kill you to stay alive. The execution mechanic or OT contributes a lot to the gameplay, it is by no means a gimmick.

Like my thoughts on NG1----hard to describe the experience in words. You know it's a video game, sure, but the exhilarating feeling of constantly under the pressure of getting murdered is also very real. I find NGS2B the most enjoyable action game I've ever played. It's crazy, but in a great way. Oh yeah, and after you finally get a grasp of how to properly control the pacing of the fights, it FEELS exactly like this: https://youtu.be/8xpYr05idnA?si=eSiXeGth6ZR3-fQp

PS: I think the problem of having METAs in single player games, in which not using META makes players feel inefficient or frustrated and using it turns the game boring, has been solved relatively well here: Master Ninja difficulty makes the game so harsh that even successfully abusing META (i.e., Flying Sparrow/Iizuna Drop spamming) will become rather hard to accomplish. It really turns NG2 into a fast-paced, thrilling as hell survival game: use any method that can be utilized just for the sake of staying alive. Not having to compare how fancy your fight was with veteran players really makes NG2 the most enjoyable action game for me.

My thoughts on the whole Master Collection as a product:
The games themselves aren't bad, however Tecmo is being truly lazy making it:

-To start with, they didn't add any kind of keyboard/mouse input support, even a bare bone one like the case of DMC HD collection.

-OG NG3 is pretty much a steaming pile of turd so let's just pretend it never existed; but apart from the 3rd game, the final versions of 1 and 2 they offer us is simply not satisfactory at all.

NG1S included here is just a transplant of PSV version(Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus), for example all the pre-rendered cutscenes are of low resolution....seriously? Why didn't add back Ayane's voice narration in Kunai tutorial scrolls?? Where is New Game+ option still not added yet(especially considering the beginning part of the game is overall harder in Sigma compared to Black, Sigma needs a NG+ option even more)??? Why are the costumes cut from Black still missing???? Do current Team NINJA really think Rachel chapters are implemented smartly enough pacing-wise(I still hope to have the ability to skip her chapters, even given that I think she is quite strong and enjoy her gameplay a lot)?????

NG2S isn't that bad, sure, some ppl may enjoy it more than OG NG2, however I think most ppl will agree that OG2 stands out more than Sigma 2 as a one-of-a-kind action game like Ninja Gaiden should be; and we gotta know that OG2 & S2 are actually really close to each other in terms of their technical structure, the proof being FiendBusa's NG2SB mod: it consists of 3 parts, a databin that restores the gore(blood, delimb, etc.), an NA version of NG2S.exe(because there are compatibility issues with other versions of .exe), the main part of the mod is actually just a bloody cheat engine script restoring enemy number, spawn, AI, etc.! I can't help feeling a bit sorry for FiendBusa doing the job that Tecmo themselves should have done earlier: giving us BOTH versions of NG2 from the start, since most of his time was presumably spent on non-creative work. Btw if Tecmo made the games mod-friendly(e.g. Steam workshop), their playability will instantly go sky rocket.

So, for us without an Xbox, it'll boil down to either MC or NGB on Xemu. Overall MC definitely wasn't made with lots of care put into it(forgot to mention, I read somewhere on Reddit that the Plasma Saber Mk.II, the reskined counterpart of True Dragon Sword, lacks a damage bonus against fiend type enemies that can be found on TDS likely due to devs forgetting to add that attribute. Shame). I gave latter a shot just for the sake of fun and found the performance quite acceptable. Maybe have a try of NGB on Xemu to see if Itagaki's style fits your taste then decide whether to buy MC or not.

Original review for NG1S:

I've only been playing Sigma 1 for now, but I already feel it's worth the price. I've tried Devil May Cry series too but I prefer this one.
I find it funny that despite recently Black is considered as a "totally superior version", Sigma's reception seemed to be "a bit" different at its launch. For instance, the #9 reply in this GameFAQ post from 15 years ago: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/935677-ninja-gaiden-sigma/43442244

It's hard for me to describe how it feels to play this game(NG1S), maybe the gameplay is too intense for my brain to do anything else than focusing on it and enjoying it. I haven't enjoyed a single player game this much for a long time.

As for difficulty, I personally didn't find it overwhelmingly hard in Normal mode; the challenge it offers is spot-on for me, from this perspective quite comparable to the most well designed parts from Souls series games(yea yea keep despising ARPGs ya pretentious action game fanboiz), I can get Master Ninja rank quite frequently.

Overall, although people crap on the fact that NGB and NG2 weren't the ones being ported to PC, I still think the bundle is worthwhile. NG1S is not that far from NGB and we have a diligent modder developing a Black mod for NG2S to bring it as close to vanilla NG2 as possible(God bless him). Of course you can go straight for NGB and NG2 if you have Xbox, but if you don't(like me), this really isn't a bad choice.

I dare to argue that most of those leaving negative reviews do so simply because they are dumb.

I'll probably give a more detailed review after spending a bit more time. For now, I'll just point out that, from yesterday(October 15th, 2023) to today when I'm writing this, the % of positve reviews has steadily risen from 51% to 54%.
We desperately need someone to interview Miyazaki about LotF to make the stupid go mute.

Edit: Among others' reviews I have read, I think the only kind of complaint that makes sense is about co-op.

I haven't ridden a dirt bike in real life yet... So cannot comment on simulation accuracy. But what I can say for sure is that this game is definitely fun to play. If you are interested in dirt bikes, give it a try.
(Controllers with gyro is highly recommended. Be sure to spend some time to fiddle with the settings.)

(edit: also highly recommend listening to The Rolling Stone's Beast of Burden while playing :D)

I personally take this game as a near perfect hybrid of Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield, a nice balance between teamwork and personal game play... Playing with your brain shut down or pushing yourself beyond your limit, you can have fun either way. Hard work and practice do pay off here, unlike Spy TF2 where you will find yourself constantly get f**ked by s**tty melee hit register and random crits instead, no matter how carefully you watch and comprehend Mr.P and CRD's lessons....

However, this is still a new game; compare it with TF2, imo THE BEST class based team FPS ever, many of its gameplay issues have at least something to do with the player base, like too many players in the team opt to play "casually"(or to put it in anotehr way, brainlessly) thus making the game very frustrating for those who want to "work hard". I am unsure how the future, inevitable change on player base will affect *this* game since I cannot be considered as a veteran yet. But overall, I feel quite optimistic about this game.

I GIVE THIS GAME 20/10.
SPOILER warning

I was going to give 9/10, the reason being while the artstyle is super impressive, the music is fabulous and the game is extremely fun, but the boat type enemies' being too powerful made it somewhat less enjoyable, since they are annoying, post a great threat to you, very bloody difficult to take down(forget about shooting battleships if you are running anything other than cannon) and offer little reward.

Then I found you could tweak game settings easily in the game file. Battleships having way too much HP? Nerfed. Bullets filling up the air so much that you can hardly savor your "raus"? Dealt. Laser Aces are OP? No problem. Luftrausers>data>res, here you go.

This makes it possible for anyone to fine tune the game until *the perfect version, suiting their own personal taste* is reached. I really appreciate this function; play-ability is at least doubled by it. Buy this game. You won't regret.

Nothing else to say than JUST PLAY IT. This game is downright epic(like any other successful Valve game).
Play both of the Portal series and you'll get how bloody hard it is to make a proper sequel to a legendary franchise.

This game, along with Fez and Super Meat Boy, should be sent into Louvre. The game design and the art style, simply put, are perfection.

Wish human beings may have the grace of having more of such masterpieces in the future.

THE best class-based team FPS game ever imo.

Edit: finally 3000 hrs - and I still can't get enough.

/////////////////////////////

Edit2:
I think I can finally give my all time favourite a relatively fair albeit quick evaluation.

I would describe this game as "a direct descendant of arena shooters"; it manges to retain the essence of Quake's gameplay - e.g., rather fast movement speed and exphasis on the utilization of it - with dialled down intensity via splitting weapons and making them class specific. Depth for competitive play is still there, however there's practically no difficulty for anyone to get into.

Core mechanics were pretty much perfect (minus one specific class capable of long range hitscan instant kill); its heavy inclination towards natural balance instead of number based statistical one is something often missing from more recent games in general, I think this design logic should not be forgotten.

But in the later half of this lovely game's lifespan it suffers greatly from some....inconsiderate decisions made by the dev team (it is said that that most original members of the dev team had either left Valve or moved on at that point). Current asual experience is quite disappointing to say the least, considering how match ruleset used to be, and players' generally overlooking the depth of gameplay doesn't help either. But still, to this day this gem is still definitely worth tens of thousands hours of you arena shooter-esque games.
