I really hope this collaboration with AM2 happened before Itagaki's team left. Yosuke Hayashi lacks in taste badly.

Unbelievably great game.....

Gameplay is a blast. Mechanics have serious depth and are tonnes of fun to learn, but intuitive enough that even playing without knowing how stuff works beforehand teaches you a lot(as long as you are actually paying attention ofc). It might even be a deliberate choice made by devs since training mode has to be unlocked with in-game credit earned through obtaining score albeit at a really small price.

On top of that, we got loads of unlockable characters, costumes, brilliant soundtrack and art..... I can't think of anything more to ask for; maybe a more intuitive save system? But it's not like its current state is terrible. So, great game, purchase ASAP, you won't regret :P

Very solid game design, all moves available are really well thought out and balanced. Certain moves may feel nuanced and clumsy at first but once you get used to it, god what a ride. Enemy designs are solid too, balanced, fun to interact with and entertaining enough to watch, what more can you ask for.
That being said this isn't a game aiming to please/fawn; if you are looking for a more casual, relaxing gameplay look somewhere else.

I mostly won't fancy platformers but had loads of fun playing this one nonetheless. Isn't a bad deal at full price and is a bloody steal when on discount.

Solid game thus far(that is, if you are like me, aka weirdo who won't be put back too much or even somehow kinda adore jankiness of crazy video games loool).

Bear in mind this game is an attempt to make a hybrid between ACT and TPS, NOT aiming to be either of them; thus, past playstyles and tactics you used in those genres won't work here. Btw savepoint resupplies are really, really generous here, filling up all of your health, ammo, grenades and stimpacks. Adjust yourself a bit and you'll have tonnes of fun.

edit: spelling error

Just finished first chapter and already in love.

Imagine arcade zapper games but you get to walk around. Really thrilling stuff :)

Update:
Make sure to install this mod.
https://www.nexusmods.com/gungravegore/mods/6?tab=description

Ignorant crybabies forced Iggymob to increase Grave's basic movement speed and tweaked other stuff as a response to complaints about how clunky it used to feel. This update completely defies the point of the game; I shall quote from what I said in a community discussion thread:

引用自 myself
Honestly, I personally much more prefer the relatively slow movement speed we have now; this way players will have to control spacing more carefully, which I consider a core strength and charm of this game - it's essentially a twin-stick shmup with third person camera! With lock on system eliminating any requirement of precise aiming, spacing is seared into its core gameplay mechanics/interactions so seamlessly people rarely realize what they are actually doing when playing it.

Check out what the guy starting this thread said and the description of aforementioned mod, they did a great job summing up the whole story.

C'mon, those saying this game is too easy and does not need you to use your brain at all, fire it up at normal or higher difficulty, try actually using W and mouse1 only and see what will happen.
I'd argue the difficulty system is rather flexible, lower ones give you a relaxing experience while higher ones do challenge your spacing control and tactical thinking.

The game is indeed quite janky at certain places, but none of it makes the game "bad"(unless you are among the "graphical sophistication above anything else" wimps lol). Core design wise, the old version was done really well.

After getting a slighly better understanding of game design, my final conclusion on this game is that, it might be fun for you in the first playthrough, then there is little more it can offer. The gameplay is too one-dimensional, and without scoring system, speedruns aren't really all that entertaining as well. The replayability is lacking severely.

With a more subjective standard of mine, this would be: ◐OOO; or this - OOOO

Its excellent visual aesthetics and great soundtrack probably played a huge role in leaving players a good impression. I'm not a big fan of this music genre but still enjoyed most of them and consider the quality great.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Camera position can use a bit of improvement, e.g. providing an option to make it automatically shift towards enemies; at least when using a controller there are a few circumstances under which enemies would start shooting off-screen.

Visual readability is kind of lame. Color saturation hierarchy is not prominent enough or not there at all (hard to say, don't have a pair of color-sensitive eyes and/or a brain alike), enemies can be hard to spot from background with only a glimpse in certain chapters. Bullet time/slow-motion will make all platforms almost completely dark on activation, good luck initiating attacks from walls/stairs/below a shelf/etc. while using it.

All VFXs add nothing but obstruction. At least all can be turned off.

Gameplay. After a quick search it seems this game is not very mod friendly; there is no sandbox mode in-game too. Shame, because some customized tweakings can probably solve most if not all of my rants.

Some consider this game unfinished; the concept about how a finished game should be can vary from ppl, I will settle with the term "not polished enough" to describe certain aspects.
>>
The only two difficulties are at polar ends. Normal is a walk in the park with little challenge offered, bullet time is hardly needed and in fact this function only dragged me down early on when I though certain actions could only be done during slow-mo like in Viewtiful Joe (more on bullet time later), while hard frequently demands memorization; some parts are pretty much unbeatable without doing so, given the short bullet time and slow regeneration. I have little to none fun playing either mode in the end. (However on hard there is a hallway full of armstrongs [weakest barehand minions] and a machine gun dude during bunker chapter iirc, which you can cheese through by spamming slash and roll simultaneously, since sucessfully slaying baddie/reflectingf bullet resets both moves, effectively granting you non-stop i-frames) No in-between at all. Imagine Ninja Gaiden II but only with Ninja Dog and Master Ninja difficulties available and runs at a speed that is actually too fast for human reaction. Dreary.

>>
Bullet time is way too slow compared with normal speed the game runs at, to the point of feeling somehow detached. Transition of slow-mo into normal speed feels a little bit stiff, unsure if simply making bullet time itself run faster helps. This thing to me feels like that it really isn't incorporated into core gameplay, instead intended solely as a crutch for two situations; either for lesser players having a hard time in normal or for those haven't memorized everything yet in hard (or finding possible solution for speedrun, maybe - why don't they give us an option for unlimited bullet time for testing purposes???). Combined with how short it lasts it I think it won't help novices too much - gotta time this damn thing well or it may run out before taking down every baddie. So it only marginally lowers timing/reaction difficulty.

>>
RNG can be discarded from the start, played a bit with it turned on - it does nothing positive, just occasionally bites and annoys. No extra replayability from this. I wonder if anyone bothers with this option at all?

>
[personal take only] Environmental hazards suck. Annoying distractions. Let me focus on enemies instead of surroundings and I'll be a lot happier >:(

>>
This game has the potential to be played in many different flavors: slow the standard game speed and reduce bullet velocity/firing frequency (so human reaction will mostly suffice), Ninja Gaiden flavored intense struggle-for-survival fights; make bullet time re-gen faster, last a bit longer and transition smoother, Viewtiful Joe the second; reduce enemy aggression, increase enemy number, place more items and let god tier players showcase their mastery as if it were DMC5 (may be hard to realize but still possible I reckon); make bullet time infinite, wollah, Superhot 2D, etc. etc.... Or just simply making something between normal and hard that actually posts a challenge without requiring memorizing stuff here and there. Well, nope. No chance.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
So, to wrap it up, this is pretty much nothing more than an orgy for speedrun lovers/forced memorization enjoyers/OCD patients/actual masochists. Casual players who haven't sunk tonnes of time into video games may find normal mode fun. Dunno if there is replayability for the latter. Overall I can't say I'd recommend it, at all; I constantly question myself why not play music video games instead (highly recommend Unbeatable).

It aimed solely to fawn speedrunners, it earns nothing but void speedrun time records. I wonder how many managed to have fun playing on hard when not doing/preparing for a speedrun, given how few non-speedrun hardmode playthrough videos exist. If my copy of this game weren't a present from my friend, I would have not uninstalled it but downright deleted it from my library, had I paid for it with my own money. Sheer waste of time.

And, before you grant me jesters/clowns, I've bothered myself to at the very least complete a full hardmode playthough. Now go ahead. :)

I consider DRG a spiritual successor to the early day non-official server TF2(although unfortunately I didn't have the chance to experience that myself).

Peer to peer connection is, in a way, an evolution of dedicated servers. The devs can leave the game alone at any time without it immediately dying,

Many people seem to emphasize only visual similarities between DRG and TF2; however far more importantly DRG utilizes the very same core gameplay design principle as TF2, as long as people are doing what their class should be doing, the whole team would automatically work without them having to actively cooperating - unlike a certain grand failure which did the exact opposite known as Overwatch. But if players do choose to cooperate the team will become unstoppable.

TF2's post-MYM matchmaking and rulesets can no longer provide an even half-satisfactory level of balance most of the time; DRG entirely bypassed this problem by being PvE.

Btw word of advice, never ever play in modded servers. Tried several of them and all were beyond terrible, just don't.

I'm not and probably never will be a music video game enjoyer, I got minus talent for anything remotely music/beats related, and the genre of some songs are totally not my cup of tea either; however, even so, this game still absolutely rocks me. The sensation of matching the notes in this particular game is simply unmatched.

With my pride as a Ninja Gaiden player I must beat the [Unbeatable] >:(
