As a sequel to "Reel Fishing: Road Trip Adventure", I do think this game offered some genuine improvements, such as making the angling aspect a lot more involved than just reeling in and maybe ocassionlly hit a QTE if the fish jumps out, such as showing you the type of fish underwater once it bites and requiring some fighting similar to games like SEGA Bass Fishing. However, I was a bit disappointed by the "Above Water Rod Technique" segments; the QTEs were never particularly hard to hit on time (even if you miss you can quickly correct) and the inputs themselves were never more complicated than stick + A (IIRC, in the previous game would actually randomize which button you needed to press just for variety sake). Failing on them would mean to lose the fish immeditaly, but I never had such issue, so in exchange the reward for success is pretty underwhelming: you only gain some time to regain stamina (more on that later) but the fish isn't "stunned" for long enough to be reeled in. And they just become such an interruption when they're this close to the finish line, and the timer still runs in the background (thankfully, the game doesn't not interrupt you when the time's up if you hooked a fish already). The chances of fiding a fish appear to always have boiled down to "use the right lure on the very specific spot", which while sometimes there's some interference from other fish, it made finding what I needed too "hassle-free" if you know what I mean (and the few times it wasn't 100% clear it was sorta frustrating)

I did enjoy the sub-quests but it felt a bit too redundant under the time limit of each session, the fishing Challenges were pretty good (like setting specific gear requirements, even if in my case it was somewhat pointless, see bellow) on the other hand except for the fact you only get to try once per day

While the whole crafting and exp. system in the previous game was kinda whatever, here it appear it has been "optimized" to a degree that feels so trivial that I seriously need to question if it's worth keeping around anymore: once you unlock the ability to "upgrade" your gear you earn up A LOT of exp. quickly, and with that I was able to max out all of my characters before even reaching the 3rd zone of the game. By the end of the game, all of my character had already reached lvl. 100 with nearly 50 skill points left that couldn't be spent on anything. Similarly, if you unlock the ability to get more materials early and eat Ceasar Salad daily then unlocking everything is no problem. And I don't really understood the point of "upgrading" my gear: why pick anything from so many choices (which I would only use stuff that are superior to what I already had anyways) when I can just upgrade what I already had and stick to it. Certain character skills were redundant as well such as enabling cooking and crafting outside of the lodge, and just in general making all 3 character playable was only good on paper: there's no real reason to ever play with Alice and Neil becomes too convenient to use for material grinding

One detail about the previous game that didn't bothered me at all before, but kinda did in this game would be the dub names; I understand that the publisher Natsume Inc. (not to be mistaken with NatsumeAtari) is California-based, and despite of working with Japanese-made games it's in their best interest to make the games "approachable" to a Western audiece, and while I understand the consistency of keeping the names of the protagonists the same (Sean=Shun, Neil=Aki and Alice=Rin) but dunno who they're fooling with these character designs: one of them is in a yukata

Speaking of which, I think the previous game had a stronger visual identity? It was largely trying to ripoff Persona 5, but I think the shading and the perspective had more pizzaz, here they are too "safe"-looking. And the same goes for the UI, it's too clinical, mobile-esque

Much like the previous game, there was no voice acting. I can accept this is still a low-budget production, but it was quite jarring to end a high-action segment like Challenge Fishing just to be greeted to a text box without as much as a typing noise. They added some mouth animation and even some motion to the character portraits which is nice even if not too detailed. It did bother me a little how many character had very long rods getting cut-off despite the fact they don't ever actually overlap with any other character

For the record, I already played "Reel Fishing: Master's Challenge" (originally released on the PS Vita back in 2015) this same year, and I gotta say that I kinda got more enjoyment out of how that game handles its progression and gameplay loop than this one; you get to cast your lure and see how it sinks in the water much like in SEGA Bass Fishing, and you need to comb the area to see the fish you are looking for (which wasn't limited to just the fish on your current objetive but all fish in that habitat, many attracted to the same bait) and had more fish variety per area than just 3 fish at all times. There were also other flourishes such as playing a different music track based on the fish's weight, giving away whether or not they fit the needed requirements. The aquarium was far more in-depth in terms of customization (here it's non-existent) and just for the sake of looking at the fish models as if they were real live fish, here they were too static

The PC port is pretty good, some issues remain such as the lack of a proper "exit to desktop" option. As well basic graphic setting such as resolution, anti-aliasing and v-sync (even though everything worked very smoothly and looked quite crisp). The mouse cursor still doesn't hides and the default Steam Input is broken, select the basic "Controller" template instead.

This might seem like a lot for something as niche as a fishing game, but I really have to keep rooting for this series and devs (literally, Tachyon appears to be the only Japanese studio willing to make fishing traditional fishing games, even for different publishers like D3P with THE Bass Fishing) and I really wish for this series to continue as long they're willing to push the envelop within the constrains of a low-budget game

Very good Space Harrier-like game and the devs are always looking for ways to make the game even better.

Game is super polished and all, and I imagine you could get some milleage out of it if you can get some people to play it with you but the problem with this game is that there's just very little content, you will see everything there's to offer in no more than 24 minutes of gameplay. Unlike other arcade-style fishing games there isn't anything as much as a campaign of any sort or particularly complex gameplay (you don't select a lure to attract specific type of fish and variety of them is low), not any more than 3 scenarios for both single-player and multi-player, and while you can play with CPU players there's not much challenge even at their highest difficulty and again it's pretty short-lived. There are online leaderboards but there's barely much to go over here and not a lot of players anyways. There aren't even achievements for obtaining all types of fish (which even then I imagine wouldn't increase playtime by much)

It pains me to give it a negative review, since the game has a good level of quality, fun gameplay, pretty graphics, nice music, good vibes but there's not enough of anything to stick around with it for too long, even at such low price.

Super fun retro-inspired arcade game based on the Namco classics such as Pac-Man and Mappy
Protagonist is cute and the game has lots of personality
Despite of its simplicity and small scale it has a lot of fun to offer

"So bad is good" is a term used to describe the original Deadly Premonition, this one is just bad, sorely lacking the charm of the original (further marred by a tedious gameplay loop and a weaker narrative).

Barebones PC port of an already ugly and poorly optimized Switch game.

WARNING FOR BUYERS:
The controls appear screwed at first, making it unable to start the game from the title screen, but turns out there are 2 reasons for this:
1) Steam Input's default controller layout has been set for KB+M on the controller overriding other input methods, to solve this set controller support to the "Controller" template
2) The default button mappings for the PC are completely messed up and need to be remapped manually one-by-one (tip: the trigger buttons need to be mapped under "analog")

After that frustration, everything else was smooth-sailing, a nice and chill arcade-y fishing game with some RPG mechanics, this can lead to some grinding since more often than not you notice you haven't unlocked the right lure needed for the next mission, but since the only thing you do in this game is fishing and that's the reason why you're playing a fishing game it's not that much of an issue. Although there are some very annoying difficulty spikes near the end if you haven't upgraded your gear to the max.

Fish and environment variety is okay for what is worth. Visually they're both okay and performance is very good as it's not too demanding.

There's also a small story in a visual novel presentation, the writing is alright although everything is undermined by the low production values; only a few backgrounds (which appear to be photographs at times), little to no animation and no voice acting at all (no english or even japanese).

There were some other minor issues like the mouse cursor not hidding at any moment when using the controller, and achivements not unlocking after closing the game (which needs to be forced-quit since there's no "exit" button within the game)

Give it a try if you enjoy games like SEGA Bass Fishing.

Pros:
- Get to honk
- Good-feeling weapons

Cons:
- Companions are useless
- Readability is a mess
- Money is worthless outside the stages
- Upgrades are inflexible
- New Game+ is a copy-paste of the regular campaign, including the same ending, which for a game this short is flat-out padding

Now that I got your attention listen up.
Cave Story it's a surprising game, with the level of quality you could expect from a medium-sized development studio when in fact has been made by one single person. Pretty and charming visuals, catching music and brilliant mechanics and secrets.
The word "Metroidvania" it's thrown around to describe this game, but that's completely incorrect as the world isn't interconnected in an organic way. Feels like people are mistaking the constant back-and-forth backtracking in order to progress with exploration.

Regardless, Cave Story it's an amazing game. Too bad this 2011 port doesn't cuts it anymore (with Nicalis' little to no interest to update it). Check instead the Switch version.[www.nintendo.com]
