This review is marked as positive, but I was flip-flopping between up or down based on one thing in the bad section. TL;DR if you don't want to be forced to use/deal with a stupid busted mechanic in any high level match, maybe skip on the game for now.

THE GOOD:
- Graphics are a huge step up from Rivals 1 IMO. As a huge pixel/sprite art enjoyer, I can't deny that the transition to 3D has been pretty darn smooth. None of the characters look out of place in 3D, and that's been great. UI is beautiful and continues to get upgraded.
- Updates have been frequent enough to keep me coming back. Etalus is a blast to play, and while Olympia kind of annoyed me in the first game, so did Etalus. So, I'm holding out hope that the game keeps up with this. Patch culture is something I've gotten used to with Rivals 1, so buffs/nerfs don't really bother me a whole lot. The game is honestly quite balanced and the team does a good job at balancing.
- Non-predatory business model: I never feel like I need to spend money in the game. The cosmetics are a bit pricey, but that's every game nowadays. No content is paywalled, and every update/new character is free, which I think is how it should be. Monthly battle passes do feel a tad much, but it's good for people who want that, and there's a decent amount of free stuff to earn through the free passes and level system.

THE BAD:
- The servers. Rollback feels good when it works, but the game still breaks quite a lot. My internet isn't bad by any means, either. Luckily I have a local scene I can hop into for offline play, but this isn't good for Rural Andy that doesn't have this advantage.

- The community. Hear me out, most of yall are fine. The people who spend every day playing this game and taunt/emote spam on other players are the problem. Unfortunately the scene hasn't grown up much since 1 as that was a problem in that game too, but just grow up brother. Game needs a block option (if there is one, I don't know how to use it LOL). I'm not a new player and don't lose a lot against scummy players, but this is just a bad look for people trying to get into the game. You want others to play it, then be better.

- The gameplay itself, rant ahead. This is why I contemplated switching over to "not recommended", because honestly as a mid/high level peak player in 1 and someone who wins their locals in 2, it feels absolutely miserable to try to do anything at low percent with how powerful CC/FH is. Players with the awareness can just counter anything you try to do unless you specifically fish for strong hits, spikes, or grabs (which doesn't matter since most followups will be CC'd anyways). Sounds like a skill issue, sure, but I'm not the only person who's complaining about this, and they give us the slightest nerfs to these systems without fixing the problem. It ruins any potential gameplan outside of trying to mash hard enough to get something to work in most grounded approach scenarios, and in my opinion is antithetical to how Rivals 1 played. Defensive options in general are fine; I think shields add a LOT to Rivals 2 in a good way! However, this option sucks to deal with beyond a mid level, and is required to use because of how good it is. I don't like being forced to play a specific way personally, and it doesn't even need to be removed, just heavily nerfed. This isn't Melee, and this mechanic feels like way too much.

anyways, it's still Rivals and I'm still going to play it. I genuinely do love what Dan and co. have done with this game and the World of Aether, but I just wanted to share my opinion in the hopes my voice is heard with the rest of the collective.

I've played this game for over a decade between when it first launched on PS3 and I've modded it to hell and back on PC. Never bothered to make a review, but now that I've gotten 100% achievements, Here's my (hot?) take:

Skyrim is a good game. Not modded Skyrim, just Skyrim. I'd say probably around after Dragonborn released I've exclusively played modded, but after going back to vanilla skyrim, I don't really understand how people write it off as just an engine for people to build upon. Don't get me wrong: mods are incredible and work wonders to extend the lifespan of the game and it's ecosystem. That being said, there's a lot of great content to dive into, a lot I've missed from countless playthroughs. You can build your character pretty much however you want, do whatever and go whatever. Sure, it's a bit rough around the edges and you can fix things, but the base game is honestly a masterpiece and I'm not afraid to say it. Sure, the combat kinda sucks, but the love and care Bethesda put into the world is something to behold.

We'll probably never get something like this from Bethesda again unless they took the Starfield complaints to heart, but Skyrim will always be here, beckoning us to return. I highly recommend you give vanilla another shot if you feel burnt out from setting up a load order over the course of 2 weeks only to play for a measly 10-20 hours before you hit a wall, or start crashing over and over. Or instead of finding 300gb worth of space for a Wabbajack modlist. There's so much to find, even if you think you've seen it all. I also think hunting for all the achievements helped motivate me a lot in my newest ~100hr playthrough.

I'll leave it on this: Modded Skyrim isn't "better" Skyrim. It's a different experience entirely, both are worth playing. Also, if you're reading this and on the fence still 13 years later, I'd still recommend the base game in 2024 easily. Just be ready for a bit of jank.

As a big Bethesda enjoyer, I wanted to like this game, but it's hard to recommend it now (or likely ever).

Positives:
Combat feels good, dialogue system is mostly fine, and there are a few skill checks here and there. The trait system returning in such a big way was really fun and felt like it gave you some fun and unique options. The effort put into the major cities is insane, and they look great and feel good to get lost in. Ship building, while a bit lackluster in gameplay aspects (There's no reason to not build optimized for storage because you will ALWAYS be overencumbered if you want to do outpost stuff) is really well-designed and fun to mess with.

Negative:
The entire game is not designed for exploration, no matter what Bethesda tells you. It's the fact that they threw away so many aspects of what made exploring enjoyable in older games: handcrafted locations filled with interesting lore, unique NPCs and crazy landmarks in a tight world space. The DNA is somewhere there in the major cities, and proper quests are pretty solid (UC Vanguard questline really stood out for me), but the 1,000+ planets means that all this content is so spread out that you practically have to fast travel anywhere and everywhere to get that. It's as if they decided to build a game solely off of the radiant quest system in Skyrim, sprinkled in some signs of life to keep you going, and left it at that. If you land on a random planet, you may find ONE unique landmark if you're lucky. The rest will be raider outposts or caves that may give you some miscellaneous resources. This isn't even mentioning the lukewarm space travel mechanics, but I personally don't mind that as much as others. It would've been cool to use the ship in a more prominent way such as TRAVELLING TO PLANETS MANUALLY, but it's not a deal breaker for me personally. Walking miles for procedurally generated content on SAID planet though? It's a waste of time, and the core gameplay loop sucks. I spent countless hours just grinding and trying to like this game. I won't spend a lot of time talking about Outposts, but they are godawful. They make Fallout 4's settlement system look incredible, and I wasn't even that big of a fan of those.

Overall:
Starfield could've been great. There's signs of a good game, but it's muddled down by procedurally generated content that isn't befitting of a "golden era" Bethesda title. When you expect that to carry a majority of the game, it's just a disappointment, and I'd rather them have released the game with 1/10th of the planets and an extra year to fill them out. I can't recommend this game until it's a bit cheaper a couple years down the line, $70 is way too much. Also hopefully modders will take to making the game better by then, but it's ridiculous we have to count on them to make the game worthwhile.

I will say I would recommend the game to someone who likes generic space fantasy and grinding, but not recommended for anyone who wants a good RPG or even a good open world game in general. Fallout 4 or Skyrim are better open world games, and New Vegas is a good RPG. Go play those.

Peak video game. Devs actively interact with and update the community on what's going on, and even after announcing there'd be a bit of a wait for Season 5, they recently dropped a smaller update to help keep fans satiated. All rewards through seasons are free, and not time-locked. Gameplay itself is very fun if not a bit repetitive, but the gameplay loop is very addicting so it's alright. All 4 dwarves have a wide array of options to help with that too. Solid with friends, but even if you don't have those, BOSCO is the goodest boy/bot.

If you don't rock and stone, you ain't comin' home.

I'd give the game an overall positive review at this point in time.
GOOD:
Huge step up from the first game in terms of content, graphics and readability imo. Much more appealing for casual gameplay with the roguelite campaign mode and having actual skins for characters is such a solid decision. Competitive-wise, the game is a bit slower than NASB1 at the moment, but it's much less of a single button spamfest than it was before. Slime meter is super fun albeit really tricky to use properly. At the moment, every character seems relatively balanced, of course this is super early on so things may change, but Slime being a universal mechanic does so much heavy lifting for the entire cast and it was a very wise decision to implement it on a balancing standpoint IMO.

BAD:
Once again, Nickelodeon seemingly pushed the devs to release a rushed product. A lot of things were addressed from last game like having voice acting at launch, the aforementioned character skins, etc. but now we have a slew of new gripes, such as online matchmaking liking to just break every hour or so (in my experience), and penalizing you for leaving matches that literally never start or for disconnects outside of your control. There are also simply not enough options in the controls menu for every player, which is an understandably missed feature considering all of the controller options, and will hopefully be addressed in an update. I'd personally like to see stick sensitivity options for people like me where my stick on my GCC doesn't quite reach all the way to the left, so I essentially can't dash without using double tap dash(gross). Rivals has this and it's a lifesaver.

OVERALL:
If you like Platform Fighters, this is a good one. Price point is a bit steep, but IMO it's way more worth it in this game for the whole package than it was for NASB1, even if I'm on the fence on which one I enjoy more mechanically at this moment. There's just more to it this time around.

Larian released a feature-complete, 100+ hour long campaign AAA quality video game with no microtransactions in 2023. That's all you really need to know if you're as burnt out by the industry as most people are.

Only real gripes are that Act 2&3 aren't as well optimized as Act 1 and I had to turn my graphics settings down to get a smooth 60fps, and that Act 3 is lacking polish all around compared to the other 2 (quests breaking etc). My ADHD brain forced me to beat the game without finishing all the side quests in Act 3 because otherwise I will just never touch it again because that's how I am, but it's really good. Would recommend even if you don't play CRPGs, because this game might be my gateway into the genre.

this game makes me really angry in... I think a good way? The learning curve on Artemis and Hamir are a bit frustrating, but it feels very rewarding once you get the hang of what you're doing... and get the right luck. I enjoy the little bits of flavor text spread out in the story mode (the notes) and learning more about the world of Aether, specifically Julesvale. The art is very nice to look at, and I'm a big sucker for pixel art. Not sure if I'd want to play the game long-term outside of the story, admittedly, but the price point is worth it to support the devs in my opinion.

Wildermyth is an experience. After 5 chapters of growing with some pretty dope, transformed characters with tons of artifacts at my disposal, all around levels 4-7, I accidentally ran my B team (levels 1-3) into the final map. A gruesome gauntlet of Deepists in front of them, powered up over the years, they managed to beat the odds. 3 of the 5 that entered died in battle for the cause. It was absolutely awesome, intense and required a bit of quick thinking. My character named Thorne(appropriately named) used Roots and Shoots to spring vines from the ground to prevent enemies from flooding behind us as my Rangers, Warrior and the other Mystic charged forward.

The characters I've spent so long getting ready for this fight were preparing defenses for a tile far away from this battle, just vibin out.

100% would recommend.

RushRev is one of the most interesting platform fighters due to it's history. It's come a VERY long way since the Icons days, both mechanically and visually. Sparking is really cool, and a lot of the new characters/redesigns bring a lot of life and uniqueness to what was otherwise regarded as just another smash-clone to make it stand out as a fully-fledge Platform Fighter.

I haven't felt one way or another about this game and haven't reviewed it as such until now, but I'm no longer recommending this game until owner of Vortex Games CAKO fully stands down on the NFT business. They tried to cover it up during the Hackathon thing or whatever, but CAKO still openly discusses how he's taking assets and code from RushRev to make an NFT game on the side.

I understand you guys have to make money somehow creating an unreleased F2P game, but holy moly was this the wrong move. After opening the idea up to your Discord server and being universally clowned on, did you think it'd be a good idea to keep going with the concept but just try to cover it up? I don't care if it isn't directly in RushRev, you're still taking everything from this game to do your little NFT project that is widely disliked.

Hopefully things progress differently from here but seeing as the owner of Vortex Studios consistently talks up web3/NFT garbage on his Twitter and Reddit accounts, I don't see things changing from here. As it stands, No F'ing Thanks.

EDIT: while I was hopeful for this game and it's future, and greatly appreciate a response from the devs, I am still keeping my review as 'Not Recommended' at this time. While it is nice to have confirmation of RR not being plunged into darkness with NFT garbage, the leader of the project clearly only backed down due to backlash from the community. I do not want to support someone that invests in projects that harm the environment, and as such feel as though my opinion hasn't changed for this title personally.
