Update: online play is live, the game is way more balanced and fair. 230 hours in and still not sick of it, highly recommended.

They're still tweaking gameplay elements, even behavior of a boss was adjusted. The promised online multi-player is still missing. The single-player adventure mode is hard as nails and not for the faint of heart. Spelunky 2 is a great game. It's still very recommendable in its current form, but maybe it should have been in Early Access for a year to manage expectations. Regardless, the constant updates and improvements show plenty of commitment by the dev team.
