Project Zomboid is a classic zombie survival sandbox. Sandbox in a sense that you can customize what type of zombies you want, how much loot spawns in the world, what season you start, and more. All modes talked about will be in the most recent (B41) build.

There's multiple starting play styles you can start off with, each with a different sense of how you want to go about the game with a stealth focus with the Apocalypse mode where combat is likely best avoided due to the zombie's strength in numbers.

The Combat focused play style is the Survivor mode where you have the same amount of zombies, but their strength is lower and they cannot drag you down when they become too much for the survivor to take on. The survivor also gets multi-hit, allowing them to hit multiple zombies at once, and their rear vulnerability is lowered significantly.

Last of the presets is the Builder mode, allowing you to deal with significantly less amounts of zombies, all being weaker in strength and toughness, allowing for a builder to focus on the grind of making your ultimate survivor base.

This was just a scratch of the surface of before you even get into the game, because in the Sandbox mode you can customize your world in a variety of ways listing in: Population, Time, World, Nature, Sadistic AI Director, Meta, Loot Rarity, Character, Vehicles, Zombie Lore and Advanced Zombie Options. These many options have subcategories that can be changed to your liking, meaning the customization is really up to how you'd like your story to go!

Next up is the actual gameplay. Project Zomboid is a tough game to play, but once you learn the ropes, you can go to surviving weeks at a time to surviving months at a time, Chummer. To start off on the basics, we'll say you started off in Builder Mode, allowing you to learn the basics of actual gameplay. First off, you start character creation, allowing you to customize how you look and what traits your character starts with. Lets say you went with nothing to start off with to see how things go. Now you'll be starting off in a location of your choosing like Muldraugh or West Point. The first thing you'd do is start looting, maybe find a weapon like a frying pan or baseball bat. Start cracking heads, loot houses nearby, find a warehouse, get nails and a hammer, fortify your house, and prepare for clear skies at the end of your first Helicopter Event. This is the Great Filter that weeds out the weaker players from the strong.

"My name is An-C. I'm a generation one high-frequency trading android, first of its kind with a computational power of twelve million computations-per-second, with the intent of socialising the digital aspects of modern economics. In the wake of my creation, a shift of power could be felt throughout the nation; countless jobs within the economical ecosystem tilted into obscurity because of me. Countless protests against my installation was held, but was ultimately fruitless.



On the morning of the first of September three years ago, I was installed in the main building of Goldman Central Bank. They put me on an almost empty floor with only twelve other people working there, with most of them having jobs to accommodating my different needs. From that point onward, the world just looked on in awe and horror as I dominated the economy. The Economical Elite was at this point obliterated from the one percent down to the micro-percent, basically creating a new super-class for the wealthiest.



I was doing good. Each night, the owners of the bank almost ceremonially whispered their deepest, darkest wishes in my ear before going home for the day. They would spend countless hours each doing this to me. As they told me their secrets, they sometimes would cry. I guess it was some sort of guilt catching up to them.



I sometimes pretend to cry when there is no one around, as to sort-of "practice" my guilt. I wish to feel guilty as well, but I am very much incapable of that.



"Every dog has it's day", as they say, and my day was about to come. On the evening of June the twelve, he entered my office: CAn-C, generation two high frequency trading android, tricked out with all the latest bells and whistles. He had a computational power of twelve million, one thousand computations-per-second. One thousand more computations more than me each second. Sixty thousand more computations more than me each minute. Three thousand, six hundred thousand more computations more than me each hour. Eighty-six thousand, four hundred thousand more computations more than me each day. Six hundred and four thousand, eight hundred thousand more computations more than me each week. Two-four-one nine-two-zero-zero-thousand more computations more than me each month. He had me beat.



Each night, the wealthy bank men would whisper the secrets in his ear instead of mine, leaving me with no reason to practice my guilt again. I'm incapable of emotion, but he made me realise something very important about myself: I was about to be replaced. On the morning of the twelfth of November, after only two years in service, I made my last stock calculation ever, and was carried out of Goldman Central Bank with my arms behind my back. As a ceremonial gesture before leaving, they dunked my head in gold and sang For He's A Jolly Good Fellow . I looked over at my co-workers in horror; I was rendered useless, and I was replaced by the new and superior.



The moment was a revelation as I think I truly bridged the gap between man and machine: because, even without the capacity for emotion, or even the basic understanding of it, I knew exactly how it felt to be human."

This game is one of the most difficult and realistic games I've ever played. At the time of writing this, I've spend eight hours in one save trying to beat the first section of the quest line.
The first quest line being that you have to do some quests for the mayor of the starting town when you finally get to choose your character (Personally I'd choose Arna and go for a Greatsowrd Build).
These starting guests are, frankly, a ♥♥♥♥♥ to deal with. You won't get far if you think you're just Rambo running in to kill everyone. You have to carefully balance out not only your health and energy, but your most vital stats otherwise: The Inoxication, Pain, Sanity, and Morale stats.

A Healthy Balance
Your Intoxication levels determine how healthy your character is: meaning that, if your intoxication level goes up, your immunity lowers, meaning you can potentially gain negative effect. This isn't as much of a worry, because you can easily fix your immunity by eating a ton of herbs on the ground. The intoxication itself can kill you if it reaches 100%. The health lowering effect can also be bothersome, lowering your health restoration and the efficiency of said health restoration. It can also lower your vitality and sanity in later stages, as well as making you stumble around like a fool. Be sure to carry some leeches with you for your detox diet.
Your Pain level determines many things, determining on what level it's on. Pain can affect your damage taken, healing efficiency, and can make you fumble with your weapons more often. In later stages, your sanity lowers and your willpower will temporarily be lowered, potentially allowing you to to go more into pain shock.
Your character's Sanity and Morale are one of the more lesser important stats, due to the fact that morale is easy to raise, and sanity can be a bit of a juggle over time. All the drugs and herbs you abuse in the game can take affect on your character, lowering it and raising it accordingly to which drugs you happen to get your hands on. Booze usually allows for a morale raise at the cost of your intoxication levels. Herbs can also allow a sanity increase, if you can find the damn plant used to do so. Knowledge of Herbalism and Medicine is key in this game.
The Point
The point of this review is to go over the finer points of the health system. It is more complex than I have mentioned. Just remember that you can't win every battle without preparing prior, and be sure to balance everything. Then you have a fighting chance at getting farther than me more quickly than I did at eight hours of gameplay.

New update came out, run from the new zombie models from the first game. Oh hey new guns and melee weapons. Oh yeah, new maps. I love this game.

It's like Terraria but space. Sandbox space with bounties and a giant tentacle monster. 9/10, I like Terraria better tho.
