Neat little game. Decent gameplay, fair exploration, not too long. Definitely recommend if it looks interesting to you.

Man, I was looking forward to this game. Two main issues that are really holding it back:

1) Unresponsive menus with long animations and all sorts of random buttons. They're a massive chore, and it sucks. Gameplay controls also seem awkward - it's like a Rockstar game in the worst possible way.

2) The game is super noisy and unstable. You can't use Ray Reconstruction without also turning the lighting quality to maximum for some reason? And everything constantly pops from one level of detail to another, with absolutely no fade or dither.

I don't know if I can play it unless some of these issues get patched. The pop in especially - why are there *so many* different levels of detail?

New automation update is going to ruin the game, and the devs are doubling down. They clearly don't understand what makes their game work, and I'm extremely disappointed.

I find it as difficult to believe as you, but this game feels a bit like a refund scam. The tutorial is long, and the first area is large, complex, and compelling. But as you progress through the different areas, rather than expand on the game up until that point, they shrink, simplify, and eventually fizzle out. Ultimately, it feels unfinished at best, and designed to trick you at worst.

However, this is only half my complaint. The other problem is the strong inverse difficulty curve. If you have a good intuition for the game, you will find it easy, but if you don't, you will find it excessively brutal. The game completely lacks teaching tools, and systems like Adrenaline actively make the game easier the better you do, punishes players who struggle, and robs the game of value for those who are seeking a greater challenge.

This inverse difficulty is worsened further by the massive advantage of playing on keyboard and mouse over a controller, a difference that allowed a friend of mine who had been struggling with the game on PS5 for years to cruise through it on their first attempt on PC. For me, it was never a real challenge at all, and the only way I can see the game providing further fun will be by creating additional challenges for myself.

Ultimately, it's not a bad game, but it's not really that great. It's fun and weird, but it's also deeply flawed. Get it on a deep sale.

This has some strengths. The minimalist approach to puzzles can, on occasion, be compelling. And, the music and art direction are nice, too. But this comes at the cost of... everything else.

Puzzles are... not great. They tend to be tedious, involving massive amounts of walking, waiting, and repeat work. They are also not hard, in fact they are usually very easy. The only real obstacle is making sure that you've found everything - chamber elements tend to be hidden in dark corners or behind walls, meaning that at least 50% of every "solve" is just looking around to find everything.

And then there are the bigger complaints.

The game feels awkward and unresponsive in a way that no other Source game I have ever played has. Hitboxes are awkward, movement is spongy, and the camera is mushy. Performance is usually fine, but it can also buckle occasionally, usually when placing portals or activating chamber elements. I'm not sure what they did to the engine, but I really don't like it.

They're also using fancy loading screens, but they are so incredibly common that they really take you out of the game. They are also so short that it makes me question whether it makes sense to have them at all. Instead, I would prefer the approach where it just puts "loading" on your screen and freezes for a moment while it loads.

And the voice acting... I'm not sure if this is meant to be a voice for the character, or if it's just how the voice actor speaks, but it is positively grating. It is clear, at least, which I do appreciate, but frankly, it sounds like a cartoon character who you're supposed to hate - which is potentially backed up by the way it is written, being awkward, inane, and intentionally out of touch. However, that only serves to worsen the problem, and together they both are extremely unpleasant.

Overall, this feels like something I might enjoy more if I were really sick and couldn't actually do anything, but I was in the mood to play some portal. Or if I just really hated myself. I don't recommend it at all.

I've been considering buying this for a long time, as the art is really nice and I don't mind the idea of a slower, simpler soulslike. I finally picked it up on a deep sale not expecting much. There were some shortcomings I was happy to overlook - the game stretches itself to fill non-16:9 aspect ratios, the lack of music or ambience is really plain, the stamina system feels really awkward, and so on.

BUT, there was one issue that I just could not accept, and that is the telegraphing, or more accurately, the complete lack of it. Enemies have literally one pose that they use to indicate that they might, at some point in the future, attack. There's no cue for *when* they will actually do so, nor is there ANY indication if an enemy is in the middle of a combo or has decided that they are done. This completely eliminates the option to play at all reactively. Instead, combat is even more slow and defensive than you'd expect from the already slow movement and stamina, and doesn't feel fair or satisfying at all.

TL;DR: Looks way better in videos than it actually is.

First of all, I'm not a big Avatar fan. It's fine, but just not something I'm into. So I'm approaching this without any real bias. But the game breaks down into a few main elements, which all fall seriously short.

* Exploration: You have a choice between exploration and guided modes, but all that does is change whether you have a quest marker. Following the quest marker is very boring, but without it, you are often left without enough of a clue where to go, sometimes even with a time limit.

* Story: It's Avatar. Yep. Mostly fine, sometimes a little awkward. I don't really like any of the characters, even though there are several who I want to. The best one so far has also had the fewest lines.

* Combat: Even on the harder settings it's really basic and boring. Maybe that changes as you get abilities, but I don't even feel like I need them. The basic bow with the basic ammunition is just too effective.

* Graphics: With very high settings in carefully selected scenes, the game can look amazing. However, that starts to fall apart as soon as you try playing it. The game is riddled with artifacts and errors, and all upscaling methods (including DLSS and FSR4) have major issues with breakup and noise. Even on a 5080, no combination of settings is stable and clear in actual gameplay. They added ray reconstruction and it pretty much fixes the visuals. They're still not as stable or clear as I would like, but it's playable.

Additional notes: The UI is ugly and clunky. It's worst-case Ubisoft, where it constantly gets in the way, but you also need to constantly engage with it. This is because the visual design of world itself is essentially just set-dressing that isn't actually designed to be playable. Also, the third person mode that they added is very awkward, and I just couldn't make myself use it. To be clear, there are a lot of Ubisoft games I really like, but this ain't one of them.

A good game with a heavy focus on self-paced exploration and light puzzle solving. It's a good "zen" experience with a handful of dramatic sequences throughout. It's probably not worth full price, but definitely a good buy on a sale. The environments are the main appeal in my opinion. However, that does go hand-in-hand with the main issue: performance.

This is a late-state UE4 app, with everything turned up, which makes it very demanding game, and unfortunately I cannot recommend running it below Ultra because it does make a huge visual difference and rob the game of it's primary strength. Fortunately, Unreal's TSR is available and you can simply turn down the internal resolution a bit on mid-range systems. However, if you have a weaker system, you may have to make some serious concessions, or simply pass.

Does not have steam cloud.
Makes you sit through super long launch videos every time you boot it.
Uses way too many different random buttons, terrible accessibility.

There is a cool game buried in a mountain of ****.
