"It's super fun, with a huge modding scene, which is super cool despite its early launch problems. Also on December 4th, 2025, they allowed Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2 players to play with owners of this game. Sounds cool, right? It kind of is.

However, what the devs did not say out loud, and what is just being discovered as of this review, is that you are no longer allowed to roll back to any update before 7.0. Luckly it seems they are not removeing the ablity to rollback completely. However it is still a bad situation currently.

"What does this mean?"
Nothing if you play the vanilla game.

But almost nobody does that. For people who use mods, particularly huge mods that overhaul the campaign, the units, or anything big like that, you are sh*t out of luck.

Unless the mods get updated, you aren't using them; your save files (that you have put 200 turns+ into and a ton of fun and time investment) Will no longer function. This is bad if you had some really fun mods from a pre 7.0 update and the mod author has left the scene or something. Which is a lot of cool mods.


"This has always been the case."
Yes It has. However you could downgrade freely before so it was not such a big issue.

"But mods get updated fast, right?"
Nope, absolutely not! They do not. The mods that are broken by this consumer-unfriendly choice are the ones that take months to even years to update, Thankfuly they do not seem to be removeing the ablity to roll back completely.


"It COULD get worse"
We are not fully shure yet. But now that things have calmed down a bit it seems as though they are not removeing rollback completley. But that is not a gurentee. And there is still the issue of pre 7.0 mods no longer working and no longer haveing any way TO work.

"I don't care about mods."
Fair enough; however, these practices are super anti-consumer. The more these things receive no pushback, the closer we get to mods being removed from all AAA games; the push to do this is huge. Companies get way more cash off of live services, microtransactions, and DLC than they do from games that embrace modding. I don't like that they are takeing options away, perticularly considering this game is NOT CHEEP. this is a very very expensive game. Perticularly if you have the other 2 or bought diffrent armys. Anything that takes my ablity to do as I like with the thing I bought is not a good thing. I do not like everything being a live service.

Conclusion
This is a fun game, However The removeal of rollback has some bad implications for modding. And I don't much like this modren push to remove modding from games of this kind, or make it harder. This is not a cheep game, this is a very expensive 100 doller title if its not on sale where I am. And thats without dlc. So anything that messes with modding annoys me.

I would sugjust for a bit, that you Go play Total War: Warhammer 2. It does not receive updates now, as it's 15 years old, but the mods are, as a result, complete and compatible in their best form now and forever!"

First OFF stay away from the first trailer up there that thing spoils so SO MUCH. most of the stuff in that first trailer there that is ENDGAME the first scene is quite literately the opening cinematic for the final boss. the next clip is half way threw the final boss. it spoils multple plot points like major ones. I have no idea what where they thinking with that one. WOW

That being said

230 hours later. This game is one of the most complete experiences i've had gaming recently. Sweet semi charictor action style combat, cool story even if you have not played the OG ff7, even better when you have, as you now notice all the wonderful little details they take from the OG, like all the npc diologe from the OG basically being present in town ambience and such. While im at it.

The towns. In many jrpgs you want to LEAVE the town and adventure. In this one the towns ARE part of the adventure. The devs 100% cooked on these. They are not only packed with detail. But basically look exactly how you felt they looked when you where younger and playing the OG.

For new players. you don't have to even really play part 1. You can start here then play part 1 as a "how we got here" situation just fine. As This one is very VERY different. Gameplay wise and in scale. It starts right at the end of the OG. in the first town with the MC telling a story about his past. that is connected but unconnected to the first games events. then opens up.

Also MANY side-quests await. but they are all worth it. your reward is not only cool stuff but more story and more game that all connects later resulting in a cool charictor development moment with which ever charictor you spent the most time with.

However the price. This game is not cheep. Times are super tuff right now. I would wait till this thing is on sale. its worth it but an almost 100 doller price tag where I am here in canada is kinda brutal right now. Get it on sale, or in a bundle.

I really wanted to recommend this. it was a good game. However I cant ill break it down.

1: The player base: Toxic Zoomers, using hacks and exploits, in all game modes, Who will call you ists isms and groomers if you call them out on it.

2: The exploits: the worst part of this game, and its only getting worse. I'm talking using physics objects to glitch threw walls to avoid damage, Attaching objects to throwables and grapple hooking to move across the map instantly. Broken stuff that was never intended to be used at all. This stuff would be fine in a single player game. But this is not a single player game. Its only going to get worse. Because the only content on youtube and tik tok in regards to this game. Is how to exploit, and hack. Which brings me to my next point on why i can't recommend.

4: The hacking: In addition to broken exploits used by zoomers for tik tok clout. There is also a legit Chinese and Russian. hacking problem. I haven't run into it yet. But enough people have that reddit is full of threads about it.

This game was good. But this is 2023, and this is a free to play game. So zoomers, children and Chinese hackers control the game. We can not have nice things. There needed to be a paywall.

------------------The facts rather you like them or not----------------------------------------
This game was a bunch of false promises. the entire thing is an 80 dollar tech demo sold as a full game. With a
A misleading trailer. False hype from VR influencers, some of whom, where likely payed to hype the game up. As has been the theory recently. It Released as a buggy mess, for 70+ dollars depending on where you are. Its not half life Alyx level . It has no story. The Campaign could be completed in less than an hour, and was a bunch of ideas with no payoff.
Game machincs, are introduced but hardly ever used. Things where added later but they are so surface level, That it's clear they where added to appease either the hardcore fan-base. The circling lawyers who are looking for another cyberpunk 2077 false advertising case. Or both.

-----The awful SDK: The most common counter argument "but it's the Gmod of VR"is pure cope nothing more----

Please stop. This is not the GMOD of VR. It was promised and promoted as such yes. The mindless fanbase has tricked themselves into believing it is yes. However. The reality is pretty awful.

- The SDK is locked behind completion of the game.
-You also must join a specific discord..that is advertised in a hidden area at the end of the game. Creating a really unhelpful gatekeepy community of hype people. However even people in the discord are getting really tired of copeing recently so its that bad.

- If you do all that... You must also learn unity to even use it. I create things for vrchat so it wasn't a problem for me. But not everyone does that so for them it is a huge time investment. A time investment that is not actually worth it because

- The SDK is a limited bare bones nothing burger. To even make working enmeys in your map, you must download third party tools created by the lavagang discord community..because the devs don't care and have not updated the thing in months. Even though it was promised.

-----------------------TLDR--------------------------------
If you buy this thing do so when its on sale at like 80% off. The gun machincs are kind of fun. And some of the ideas are kind of cool. But this thing is a complete mess. Sold as a full complete game. For full price. With a misleading trailler, and VR influencers. That may have been payed to promote it and withheld that information(illegally).

It's an example of once decent devs. Shooting for the moon. Over estimating what they could deliver. Making promises they can not keep or do not have the man power or tech to implement. Then failing to admit wrong doing. The community is super toxic and defensive. If you bring any of these things up. Its a complete mess, that I don't think will or can be fixed.

Going to try my best to give a full reivew. I've played a lot on itch.io, although I'm not a hardcore fighting game fan, so I may use the wrong terms occasionally.

-----------What It Is-------------
It's a great combination of turn-based RPG and fighting game mechanics. It really appeals to both genres in a way that just works. it's really well executed.

----------The Community (It's Good, It's Really Good)-------((update 2025: ITS STILL SUPER GOOD you can STILL find matchs every single day and full 32 person lobbys))
The fighting game community gets a bad rap, but this one is incredibly welcoming and chill. I haven't experienced any of the toxicity the FGC is known for while playing. No need to worry about it, it's a great environment.

--------The Modding Scene------ ((update 2025: there is over 200 modded charictors now. this community is epic)))
YES, the modding scene is really good. There's already over fifteen characters that have been created by the amazing Discord community. I was worried that it would have the same problems that the Mugen community had in the past with unbalanced characters, but it's not an issue. The modded characters are all unique, and they're all balanced due to the playtests and ratings they get from the players in the Discord. These modded lobbys can be found under "multiplayer(Legacy)" The dev is working on an easier way to integrate it the steam lobbys so by the time this is read it may be changed a bit.

UPDATE 2/13/2023(((Update 2/28/2025 200 Modded Charictors and counting the mugen comparasion is real)
We officely have a workshop now. 30 modded charictors are available as of writing this about 15/20 of them are completely viable so an entire fighting game roster. With more on the way. The discords still the place to go for now until a few creators put their stuff up in the coming days.

----Match Length----
Matches usually last around twenty minutes. It's being turn based its actually surprisingly relaxing, I usually have a stream or YouTube video on in the background while playing. After the match is done the entire thing is played back in real time. Like in superhot and that is what you will often see on youtube. It really does look like a vintage Newgrounds/Stickpage style stick fight. It gets crazier with mods too.


-----------basics----------
Just a surface-level look I'm not good enough to make a full-on guide. I'll leave that to the community :3

You have your movement options: which are always available and unique to each of the 4 official characters. These change depending on if you are in the air or in some other states.

Your basic attacks: which are your bread and butter attacks they come out fast and you will use them often.

Your specials: always available and change depending on the game state, for some characters. far riskier to use. As they often take more than one or even 2 turns to come out.

And your super. As in a fighting game these are your strongest and most unique attacks these use super meter gained throughout the match. These are also risky to activate so you need to think about when you are using them and why.

Your defense is just that your blocking and dodging. This is the same over the four official characters. What's cool about this is perfect blocks..100% are in here. You can do the Daigo Parry in glorious turn-based combat if your good with your timing and it's complete with a hype VFX and sound.

Dodging: is a measured risk in the same way it would be Super Smash Bros. Set distance and since this game has perdiction afterimages really easy to read.

Free switch: Turning this on allows you to cancel your next melee move on your opponent

Flip switch: Allows you to flip the direction of your attack on lock in.

DI: Allows you to ajust where you will fly when hit. I've been told its alot like in smash. I know its essential to not getting endlessly comboed :p

Distance bar: Pops up on some charictors when choosing a move Or walking forward. its exactly what it says the distance you will move. Since there is prediction afterimages you won't be guessing either which is wonderful.

------------------Typical Round-----------------
You choose your move lock in. Wait for your opponent to choose theirs and then stuff happens. then the game-play loop resets until someone wins.

After the match the entire thing is played back in real time superhot style so you can go wholly crap that was only 30 seconds.

---------TLDR-----
This is a super unique combo of turn-based RPG and fighting game.

With a really welcoming community and a super active modding community that has already made over 15+ unique characters. If you get bored of the small roster, the cool part is it's actually really hard to get bored. As the 4 released characters are all very different. Easy to pick up hard to master.

The UI can be intimidating but it just takes a bit of messing about to learn and you will understand it. I'm sure the dev is going to be working on that in the future.

Give it a try; I would love to see this become a huge thing on Twitch and YouTube.

When it Plays like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Korean scam game. When their is evidence that is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Korean scam game. Such as an abusive cash shop. It is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Korean scam game. you need to stop putting your head in the sand and saying "but its not though"

its a shame this game didn't survive long :( years later I look at it and think there was potential here now gone
