This game is worth playing. For real. Don't listen to the haters, this game does a lot of things really well. If any other studio had released this, it would be hailed as a success. It’s absolutely worth your time, but it’s also a game that demands you respect its learning curve. Marathon is a hardcore experience that manages to feel accessible without losing its edge. It’s beautiful, it’s punishing, and it’s being unfairly maligned. If you can push through the initial UI confusion and the rapid early-game TTK, there is a wonderful game here waiting to be mastered.

Pros:
Atmosphere: The world is beautiful, driven by an interesting art style that sets it apart from the sea of gritty shooters. The graphics are top-tier, creating a space you actually want to exist in and fight for.

Immersion: Between the fantastic voice acting and the narrative depth, the story isn't just a backdrop, it’s a very good hook. The game also has a really deep lore, it's really overshadowed by everything else.

Gunplay: The gunplay is fantastic, which is vital for a game this intense. More importantly, it feels genuinely accessible to console players, a feat many extraction shooters fail to achieve.

Questing/Progression: The quest system is a standout. Unlike annoying quest objectives in Arc Raiders, these missions feel better with great difficulty. They mirror the depth and high stakes of Tarkov’s questing but elevate the experience with good rewards and immersive storytelling. I also appreciate that we only have to do the Liason quests once, we don't have to repeat these quests for reset.

Cons:
TTK: Currently, the Time to Kill (TTK) feels a bit too lightning fast in the early game. Specifically, the gray and green shield tiers could use an extra second or two of breathing room. While blue and purple shields feel balanced, the early-game "squishiness" can be jarring and the game has to still hook in new players.

UI Friction: The interface is confusing and filled with static noise. While you eventually find your sea legs the more you play, it’s far too difficult to determine key information at a glance. A more dynamic, intuitive UI would go a long way. We need icons to look more of the same and be able to make loot determinations with a few more glances.

Game Economy: The current free kit system feels a bit lopsided. Having free sponsored kits takes away from the high-stakes tension of an extraction shooter. Everyone should have some skin in the game or be forced to run a Rook. Additionally, paid sponsored kits are currently priced too high for what they offer, they should be cheaper. Heck, everything should be slightly cheaper, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 900 credits for a shield is robbery and the loot you get isn't worth as much so it's hard to make credits. For a game advertising everyone seeking a payday, I don't feel like I'm getting one.

IT'S POKER WITH GUNS, OK.

3/28 (post Cryo Archive Update.)

Not gonna lie, I didn't expect Bungie to fully commit to the hardcore experience. Slightly hard to recommend this game specifically for Cryo Archive. I have 130 hours total (including the server slam) I have never seen a vault key in my life. It requires you to complete six vaults in order to obtain the AI subroutines to even challenge the Complier. I don't think I'll ever have a chance to fight the Complier unless Bungie makes changes to make the game more accessible.

TTK has not been addressed. They nerfed a shotgun, that's about it. I'm trying to remain open minded but if issues aren't addressed in the next couple weeks I can't see myself playing the game any longer until probably season 2.

In 2015:

Well... after 2k hours playing this game. I think Lalafells are creepy. :D 10/10 would play again.

2016 Update:

Now at 8k hours, still think Lalafells are creepy. I love this game though :D Heavensward while being the first expansion is amazing!

2019 Update:

I'm now at 21k+ hours at this game, I absolutely am still in love with this game. In some ways it has changed my life due to the people I met along the way and the connections and bonds I have formed. I have attended 2 out of 3 NA fanfests and met Yoshida both times, I love the development team and community. Lastly Shadowbringers just elevates the story telling of this game to a whole new level.

2022 Update:

Kind of a coincidence I chose to do this around 31k+ hours into this game. I'd say some of the magic of the game has faded, in a sense you could say the game has changed enough that it's no longer as shiny as I could remember it. Endwalker is a fantastic conclusion to the 10 year Hydaelyn & Zodiark arc. While the connections I have made in this game has been quite everlasting, I feel like the community is slowly drifting apart, you could say it's either the cross-datacenter party finder or the fact that this game fails pretty hard in making guilds/free companies something worth investing into... while a lot of people tout the community of this game as one of it's strongest points... I can safely say it's waning, I hope they can do something about it.

2025 Update: I hate Dawntrail. 1st part sucks, 2nd part is better, post MSQ kinda sucks so far. The fact that I only went up 3k hours between 2022 and 2025 speaks volumes.

That's all.

However, this still stands true...

Play this game, it'll change your life depending how you decide how to play it.

P.S. Yes Lalafells are still creepy.
