World of Horror is styled to look like a lost Japanese horror adventure from the '80s running on a haunted PC-88. Your enjoyment of World of Horror is likely to be directly proportional to how cool of an idea you think that is.

I think it's really cool, myself! Pick a protagonist and start investigating a string of occult mysteries in small-town Japan. Investigation takes the form of semi-randomized incidents and encounters, which force you to make a choice, or use a tool, or grapple with WoH's wonky combat system (easily the weakest part of the game). Over the course of five cases, your protagonist will unlock perks and spells, as well as suffer persistent physical and sanity damage. Then you'll face the cult responsible for the overarching threat from beyond.

Junji Ito is the main and primary inspiration, but real heads will pick up references to all sorts of J-horror.

WoH has all kinds of promise, and the modular nature of the whole thing seems like it's ideal for mods and DLC. Don't hold your breath for 1.0, though. The development team reportedly consists of one guy with a day job, and he's made a hell of a game, but at this rate it's going to be a while before WoH leaves Early Access. Or maybe he'll make the announcement tomorrow, the hell do I know.

I never played Dark Souls on a console, and my first experience with the series was slamming my face repeatedly against the awful Prepare To Die Edition port. It was janky and obviously a half-assed effort, and on top of everything else it incorporated Games For Windows Live. A From Software dev later admitted that they rushed the port out in order to get DS on PC as quickly as possible. A heroic fanmade patch later made PTD kind of playable, but even then it was pretty rough and murky.

After PTD, DS Remastered is an absolute joy to play. This time, the port was handled by a Polish studio called QLOC, who also did the excellent PC port for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. They are the past masters of porting, and DS Remastered might be their best work yet. It's responsive and clear and smooth, and everything you would want the definitive edition of a gaming classic to be. After trying several times to get into Dark Souls and bouncing off hard each time, I finally get it.

Who'd have thunk it? Harebrained Schemes managed to breathe new life into the moribund BattleTech franchise, much like they did with Shadowrun. I love this game, I can't wait for the expansions, and I hope they make half a dozen sequels.

If the current license holder for the tabletop game had any sense, they'd use this game and its gorgeous art design as the starting point for a complete revitalization of BattleTech.

(Fun Fact: This game got review-bombed by regressive permababies shortly after release because it lets you make a character that uses the pronoun "they" instead of "he" or "she".)

From what I'd heard of Gorogoa, I was expecting a clever puzzle game with beautiful handmade art. I wasn't expecting a genuinely moving story about faith, aging, and the power of memory.

Ever watch the BBC series Luther, the one with Idris Elba as a detective who hunts serial killers?

Ever wondered what Luther would be like as a manga?

Probably not. And now you never have to, because this game exists!

The control scheme is insane and some of the puzzles are ridiculous, but there's a PDF in the game directory that provides all the solutions. As long as you know what you're getting into, I have no problem recommending The Silver Case. So don't expect something like LA Noire; this is a deeply quirky interactive mystery comic.

A superior puzzle platformer, featuring Ian Stocker's trademark gorgeous soundtrack. Maybe someday I'll be able to finish it!
