As addictive as Vampire Survivors, this one similarly plays by missions selected via map. Once in the missions, the game has a card based combat system with tons of variables based primarily around the character you pick (similar to the prior game). You'll find hidden power-ups, relics, and whatnot as you explore, unlockables also being toggleable in the hub town. Highly recommended, give it a go!

Having just finished what I believe is everything in the game (I think, there aren't any further unlockables or achievements....), stating for a second time: Highly recommended, I look forward to seeing what poncle does in the future with it!

This review is based sheerly off of the demo experience, I'd highly recommend this game if you like Elder Scrolls style RPGs. Combat feels fun. I tested various arms combinations and they felt like a clear evolution of the last two ES combat systems. The added shoving and limited dashing (which allows you to actually avoid damage as long as you don't abuse using it for dodging), along with other nuanced features, make combat more dynamic. If you're like me and have a fetish for hand to hand, this appears to be viable so far. The crafting systems have neat features (cooking, alchemy, and item crafting) that make it another distinct advancement on what we've experienced in similar games. The skill trees are varied, but not very deep (which is ok..... if mods are available later). The skills do have neat permutations that I imagine let you play in fun combinations that surely make you feel like you have a unique build. So far, it seems like you'll have a lot to consider when you level up. If you like being rewarded for exploring, this game seems to do so. Look in every corner and on every table for goodies! There are optional bosses in the demo that were introduced with fun little cut scenes and could be cheesed if preferred, but with dashing, you can actually play as a lightly armored character and not die instantly. I managed to make an enemy... fall (?)... or something like that in combat, but didn't spend much time trying to repeat the event (just noting in case this is a viable combat strategy). The world space and lore are fun, I'm a fan of the setting and real world mythology tied to it.

Will update later after I eventually buy the game, just want to put it out there that I currently do recommend at least checking out the demo.

I reaaaallllyyy want to recommend this game, but after experiencing the game loop, I find myself craving something the game will never deliver.

Not being a stranger to rogue-likes, I enjoyed the wonder of the game world initially. Exploring was fun. Then I started to find that after many unsuccessful runs, the town wasn't changing much and I kept getting the same abilities over and over. If there was a little more control over what you get, I would probably be writing a better review, but after coming to the conclusion that all characters are effectively the same and the things you do have control over don't vary enough, I find I just don't enjoy the game. The environment is also rather homogeneous and kind of just blends together after playing long enough.

The controls feel good once you get used to the physics. The audio is nice. The visuals are neat (until they're not(?)). There's a lot of fun silliness to see. It ultimately just didn't feel like I was building towards much with each run. Maybe you'll feel otherwise?

If you find the game on sale, buy it. Don't expect a riveting story, I'd recommend maybe doing an hour or two, then putting it down to avoid burn out.

If you enjoyed the top down Zelda games (and other SNES or GB/C/A titles of the likes), get this game. From fun Easter eggs to trade quests to sequence breaking dungeons, they pay homage with an enjoyable story to carry it all along. Highly recommended!

It has been a minute since playing this and I get excited every time I pass over it in my library, that's a testament to much I enjoyed it. May pop back on and see if my brain will let me replay it (I normally have a hard time playing games I've beaten again for some reason).

Solid combat oriented Metroidvania, the game actually ends. You can't get all the endings from one playthrough and there are 3 endings, the collectables all affect gameplay in some way, and the traditional melee and ranged platformer combat. Movement in the game feels good as you have a fair degree of control over where you position the protagonist during exploration and combat, you'll unlock various movement features as you choose how to proceed with power-ups. There are plenty of hidden things to find throughout the map without being tedious, I think I only looked up one item (it was the last thing I had to collect and didn't want to spend time scouring every location again). The story elements are fairly well hooked into eldritch horror and are revealed as you travel through the map and interact with the world.

Would highly recommend giving a try!

I'll update this as I play because I'm hoping that something changes my mind or maybe something clicks into place, but I can't currently recommend this installment.

I started the franchise at AC 2, which wasn't a fast paced game, but the pace of engagement felt appropriate and movement wasn't cumbersome. I think 3 slowed it down, took a while to get used to, though I felt like I had control of my machine. AC4 cranked the speed up beyond 2, changing the lock on mechanic and a number of other components of the game that allowed it to FEEL a lot better as far as movement went. AC5 slowed things back down and introduced a number of new mechanics to make the slower pace feel engaging and varying parts have distinct purposes.

This game feels like what I remember 5 feeling like as far as pace goes, but the new lock on mechanic has changed how strafing works. Now it seems as though firing up to 4 armaments at once is encouraged, which took the buttons you'd otherwise use for strafing. My AC will change direction and disengage (despite buttons to fire being held/pressed) and it's hard to tell if it's a lock on issue, some mechanic I'm not aware of, or maybe I'm reloading. The stagger system seems out of place for the game right now. I just got done fighting Balteus and felt like there weren't many avenues to try and take it down with the pool of parts available and a quadruped with grenade canons went through it well in the first section, but it was difficult to navigate melee in the second part. I may just not understand the direction or method of avoiding the attacks, but it's always felt intuitive in prior games and if I was having difficulty, it was because I was being stubborn with part selection or knew my timing was off. I tried what few variations were available and still ended up with a quadruped with blade, missiles, and a single grenade canon. The fight just felt bad and winning wasn't thrilling, it was hard to tell what was happening. Avoiding missile swarms while accounting for avoiding pot shots used to be achievable. This fight was just getting clipped with missile despite having the best quick boost available and ending thrust running into opposing canon fire (downtime from the QB after having to reasonably avoiding a missile curtain often lead to this, how does one "skill" out of this?)... Am I just getting old???

There are features that seem neat, such as projectiles bouncing/deflecting (don't want to only have negatives on this...). The game looks great, parts have style, I WANT to like it. Maybe I need another elite controller to use the bottom side buttons for QB and thrust since the shoulder buttons are taken. If you have advice that may flip my opinion, I'm open to it.

10/13/23 new opinion after completion:
If you're reading this and want a modern coherent mech game, go ahead and get this one. I'll stop being a grouch, it's not a bad game. It just has waaaayyyyyy less stuff than the prior games. Like, a lot less. Just go back and play those if you like this one. AC Last Raven and 4/4A (maybe 5?) had the most customization with a litany of component slots that this one just doesn't have. Auxiliary slots, internal components, functions of various components (cores used to have the option for built in anti-missile or turrets, heads had ECM various levels of mapping function and targeting features, and such...), weight altering parts for better turning or QB in specific ways, optional parts that helped specialize builds based on core slots (kind of still around, but not the same in this one), and likely other features not mentioned here no longer exist. Go back to the prior mentioned titles for stuff like this.

Movement feels better if you play with the lighter legs, certain weapons are plainly superior and there's almost no reason to try other builds or neat gimmick weapons, targeting and odd lock on issues still persist, just stagger/destroy/repeat, and I enjoyed the story interactions. Trying out different builds was fun, don't get me wrong, so still try it until you find that one size fits all solution, save that one, then keep playing around. I'll maybe mess around a bit with various parts before letting it rest. I'd ultimately recommend giving it a go if you're interested in the genre.

Pretty sure I have more time on the game than recorded, but would highly recommend to anyone that enjoyed 90s and 2000s 3d platformers. Progress through the literal sandbox world via various movement and combat upgrades that are required to make it to the next area, there's also a lot of fun backtracking should you remember something previously inaccessible in a prior area to go to. The world is vibrant, the dialogue is silly, and the story is simple.

Would highly recommend to anyone looking for something that feels like Conkers, Banjo, or.... uh, Glover?

My PC background is a screenshot from when my girlfriend and I played The Forest. We were on a raft, I was steering and she was doing the thing from Titanic. We had a blast.

You can't make a raft in this game. You can't make a lot of stuff in the game. It was delayed once or twice, what has been done between now and the last delay? I can almost forgive the sparse areas, but has there not been plenty of time to implement parallel items or replacement items to the huge loadout from the first game? We had to put together a flintlock pistol, it was tedious and not worth it, but it was fun.

This review is coming from a guy that gives too many opportunities to the wrong people, the biggest benefit of the doubt, and the realest generosity towards people that clearly made easily avoidable mistakes.

I'm sure you guys will get a little whiplash from this, but we didn't need 9 hotkeys, we needed maybe 2 or 3 (just do 2 and have it be on a button that swaps between them, hold to put away).

You guys made a wonderful game the first time around, make it this one right please.

Not complete, but worth a run through as is in my opinion.

To all the people saying it's been out for 2 years, look at the release date. OCTOBER 2020. As of the release of this statement, it has been a little less than a year and a half of EARLY ACCESS, which is still development (and should help secure an earlier or at least cleaner game release due to financial security). If you're the kind of person that doesn't understand how product development works, wait until the full release to purchase. If you love D&D and want to support the studio, which has made great prior titles, such as the Divinity games, go ahead and give it a go. Note that they have to put work into EVERY varied scene/option/choice that your characters can take, which is going to take a lot of time if done with care as to not end up like typical Bethesda releases. Larian is refining everything, not sure why people are complaining about this.

This game has the best D&D turn based gameplay for a game with this level of quality of visuals that I've experienced. There are many ways to approach the world and possibilities are growing with every release. They just expanded throw mechanics, refined hundreds of cinematics, and added more content. You can use magic to do cool stuff outside of combat, stealth also has non-combat use, you can jump (haven't seen this much in larger isometric titles), your attributes directly affect how you interact with the world, and the roleplay mechanics feel good.

Again, if you love D&D, I'd recommend getting it now. If you're impatient and acutely critical of things that you don't understand, don't get the game.
