Definitely deserves ALL the praise it's getting.

So close to perfect, below are all the flaws I have after getting all achievements and a couple of playthroughs. The sum total of them probably impacted my enjoyment about 1%, so don't take this as a bad review:

- It's not well built to be a platforming game. There are a few sections (looking at you Gestral Beaches) where the difficulty is made harder by the poorly implemented jumping mechanics. It's not a platforming game, so it's not a huge issue. The challenges are optional outside of completion

- Hard to track items. If you're a completionist, you'll have a miserable time here without liberal use of guides. There's no easy way to track which areas you've gotten everything inside, which pictos you're missing etc. Again only will impact some.

And really, that's about it. Now the positives:

- Story. No spoilers obviously, but when the story opens up it does get VERY good

- Gameplay. The core gameplay loop is turn-based Final Fantasy meets Dark Souls parry/dodge mechanics and it is extremely satisfying. You build up power over time, some bosses you simply WILL NOT be able to kill until you're strong enough, and getting power in this game feels very satisfying, which leads onto the next point

- Power/Agency. Early on, as in every RPG, you don't have many skills or picto synergy and you have to rely a lot on getting good at dodging/parrying. You get powerful in various ways, higher attributes, more passive buffs which can synergize, weapons that have extra buffs on them, powerful effects and debuffs you can apply to yourself and enemies. By the endgame, with the right build (which is not easy to get the full part of) you can confidently 1-shot everything. Even post Stendhal nerf, I was still able to 1-shot the final superboss dealing 91m damage.

The journey in this game slowly makes you more powerful over time, perfectly echoing the game's core message; "For those who come before; we continue".

Few notes, more games like this please.

Ignore all the debby downers complaining about minor issues and DLSS/ray tracing not being absolutely perfect, the game is a great port and I've not had a single issue in nearly 7 hours of full gameplay bar the achievements not working, so if you value them and don't want to replay anything then maybe hold off for now.

Best thing you can do is try it out yourself and if it doesn't work, get a refund before 2 hours. You'll apparently know pretty fast if it doesn't work.

One of the very few examples of being able to iterate on something near-perfection to produce something of an equal or better quality; FF7 Remake does an impeccable job of capturing everything about the original that made it good and transformed it into a new style for a newer generation.

Fans of the original will be pleased with just about everything barring the combat, which you'll either love or hate. The move away from turn-based has been divisive amongst FF fans and while I think it's done well sometimes (like here) and done poorly in others (like FF15, which feels clunky and often time tedious), I do still miss it somewhat.

The PC port is quite polished now and supports HDR, so maxed out it looks like how the original FMVs looked in my kid mind playing OG.

Decent amount of replayability to go through hard mode and find other content, but being the first part of a 3-part epic you could breeze through it and be left wanting more.

With no sign of Rebirth coming to PC yet as of writing this review on 21/09/2024, you may prefer to hold off until all 3 parts are released together.

The game, while super short (unless you enjoy grinding), is terrific fun and maxed out looks gorgeous. No major bugs, there is STILL a bug where if you die shortly after getting an armor piece it's lost for that save and you have to either reload the save or redo it in NG+. I didn't realize that was the case until 10+ hours after, and it's a late-ish game piece so I wasn't interested in redoing everything again.

Getting all the achievements is very casual, no multiple playthroughs required. Getting a fully complete save though will be VERY tedious and require a lot of grinding for weapon XP but if you can live without that you should be done in about 20 hours.

If you want something casual to blast through for a weekend, this is perfect. The biggest issue with it is the price, so don't bother unless it's heavily discounted.

In case you haven't heard, BG3 is a pretty good game.

Not much more I can add that's not already been said to death, but if you even remotely enjoy RPGs and the setting this is a must.

If you're reading this expecting that after 2 or so years that this game would be finally polished, expect to be disappointed.

- Infrequent crashes
- Very frequent quest soft/hard locks that in the end required me to install CET (Cyber Engine Tweaks) to fiddle around with forcibly completing one of the PL quests
- Loading a save in a vehicle causes issues
- Enemies frequently get stuck inside boxes/stairs

But in spite of all that, there is a very fun and thought-provoking game underneath it. Near the end of achievement acquisition, having to constantly check quests to get around soft-locks became tedious and made finishing it feel more like a chore.

Overall, great fundamental game that needing another 5 years of development

Basically perfect rougelite, can't fault it.

Progression feels good and natural, every run you do is a learning opportunity to improve.

Nothing is too strong, no build is too broken; everything is quite well balanced.

Also you can use a live shark as a weapon

Very rich, well-designed Hitman game which lets you dress up as Santa Claus and walk into military compounds completely inconspicuously.
