Very few games make you feel like your choices, both in character stats and realtime gameplay, actually shape the journey as much as this game.

Free updates made this one of the best games of this generation. Free mods made it even better.

Positives:

The character creation is interesting an expansive. Lots of options to tune the gameplay difficulty and experience instead of simple "enemy has more or less hp."

Negatives:

Distractingly bad lipsync, character animations and English voice acting. Trying to have realistic visuals while having noticably poor low quality textures and flat lighting even at the maximum settings. Available control presets for both keyboard and controller seem completely different to usual for these kinds of action games. Could not access settings for the game before completing the tutorial, character creation and a handful of cutscenes introducing the story. UI labels are often mistranslated (probably machine translated) and I saw multiple typos (loong instead of long and similar)

There might be an interesting game here, but it feels like the entire budget went to your ability to customize your character and everything else is very lacking and not worth my time.

The Context

My previous favorites in the series are AC2, AC3, and Syndicate. I couldn't get into Origins or Odyssey.
Difficulty used: story combat, expert stealth, guaranteed assassinations enabled. 99% avoiding open combat, except for forced sequences (like Yasuke's). Played with a controller.

The Good

  • You can pet stray dogs and cats
  • Guaranteed assassinations option makes gameplay feel similar to ACs of old, big plus for me
  • Fun level design leaving options to sneak & climb around, and make quick escapes
  • The world design with its distinct regions and a size that feels like a good balance between a sense of scale and respecting my time, though the tiktok attention span is not served well the amount of time between points of interest
  • The seasons are a nice addition
  • I love the objective board for tracking what I can do next
  • The unlockable fast travel points scattered around the world have felt good
  • You can pause the game even in cutscenes
  • Auto-follow to match your walking speed to the NPC thank god
  • Option to skip QTEs entirely
  • It doesn't feel like a collectathon
  • The UI (excluding the main menu when you start the game) is clear, serves its purpose without getting in the way too much*
  • Works on Linux (though latest nvidia driver requires tweaks not yet present in any current proton releases)

The Meh

  • Great graphics, but not worth the performance cost; the visuals feel comparable to The Witcher 3 but require much much more from your GPU. I realize the lighting in Shadows is technically much more accurate, but it is not reflected in how it feels across the screen
  • The story is a bit cliché and predictable, but to me it's been enjoyable. The writing seems okay to me, when just taking it at face value and not trying to find points to criticise
  • Character swapping is a little inconvenient, but I like that you can do it almost anywhere
  • The camp building and upgrading is fun, but held back by the menus feeling slow and unresponsive to use
  • I love the quests giving a search area instead of an accurate quest marker, but the consistent 3-step instructions are too strong of a reminder that it's a structured gameplay system instead of organic hints you've received from NPCs; they also seem to appear from thin air a lot of the time?

The Bad

  • Too much repetition in some of the side objectives, such as the shrines where you have to collect lost pages or pray at specific spots; 2 per location max would've been good, but there's often 3 or 4.
  • Inconsistent climbability of terrain: many rock formations can be climbed, many others cannot, and I haven't been able to tell without trying. I would prefer all that reasonably look climbable to be, even if it trivializes objectives; let the game reward clever alternate pathing
  • *Menu transitions are awfully slow to the point that it actively annoys me, especially in frequently used menus like the objectives, world, inventory and mastery; this also applies to merchants, which force going through the dialogue each time, including awkward pauses with nothing happening
  • I wish NPCs that required a specific character to talk would allow initiating the conversation as either character, as long as character swapping is available in that moment
  • Lipsync is terrible and often entirely missing even in main story cutscenes
  • Assassinate prompt sometimes disappears as I'm about to press it due to small movements by the enemy or Naoe. Same button being light attack, I make noise instead, get caught, and reload. Not fun.
  • Too much of the story is conveyed through cutscenes, too little through gameplay

Overall Conclusion

I've enjoyed my time with the game and continue to enjoy it. It's far from perfect, but it's good fun. The story, the locations and targets are just good enough and varied enough to keep me interested.

If you like ARPGs at all you should definitely play this one. I've gotten to the end game (lvl 100 monoliths) on 4 characters, 2 since 1.0, and I've had a blast on every single one of them. There's an excellent balance of player agency and loot RNG combined with a lot of build variety that actively encourages playing through on multiple different characters, all while allowing practically free respec at any time to fix build mistakes and ensure all characters can reach the end game, even if it ends up involving a lot of trial and error. It's not a perfect game, but it's one I see myself playing for thousands of hours to come.

Starfield is an improvement on Bethesda's previous grand RPGs in almost every way. If you enjoyed Skyrim or Fallout 4 and don't actively dislike the space theme and setting, you'll almost certainly enjoy Starfield. If this is your first time playing a Bethesda RPG and your expectations are based on modern games from other studios, you may be in for a rough ride.

Voice acting is good and many (not nearly all) of the notes you find in the world are also fully voice acted. Character models and faces look good in general, but can hit the uncanny valley for some. The 3-dimensional body-type customization for player is not as powerful as I would like it to be. Clothing and spacesuit variety is quite limited considering the vastness of the settled systems and NPCs seem to have a lot of clothing you do not have access to.

The game feels technologically dated in many ways. Animations are often a bit janky, textures are mediocre at best, no HDR support (or even Auto HDR), no ray-tracing or other recent improvements in graphics. Performance is lackluster unless you're willing to sacrifice a lot of the visual quality or take an hour investigating your ideal settings, some of which will require tweaking an ini file outside of the game.

Location discovery and XP pop ups in the UI get in the way a lot and these were the first thing I modded away. Quick looting gives you only the names of items, so you'll have to memorize what's useful and what isn't, if you want to be looting quickly.

Your running speed is much faster than NPCs you have to occasionally follow and your walking speed is much slower. Using an analog input like an xbox controller does not help with this issue. Using console commands to change your speed can fix it, but it comes at the cost of awkward player animations (half-jogging everywhere).

Space flight is fairly basic and limited to areas around planets and space stations separated by loading screens, both between the areas and for landing/take-off. Docking to space stations and other ships is done with a hotkey when you're close enough, giving you a cutscene that gets old after the first few times you've done it.

Fast travel is a little too generous and allows skipping space flight entirely, if you've already visited the target landing site. Fuel doesn't matter and seems to only serve as a way to limit your maximum fast travel distance. If you're looking to get stranded on low fuel, this isn't the game for you (at least without mods that will presumably come to fill that gap, but they're not here yet).

The amount of stuff you can carry across your ship and character is very limited, especially early on, to the point that outpost building can be tedious unless you meticulously plan what you use your storage space to carry. I like to stock up on resources so I don't have to return to the same planet again soon, but the storage limitations make this approach impractical, unless you invest in your ship tech and get one focused on storage space, which will take many many hours to accomplish.

The default scanner distance of 10m is very small and should likely start at 30m, extending to around 100-150m with perks instead of the current 50m. The scanner shows you the path to your currently active quest objective, if there is a direct path. This was mostly distracting to me.

The quests for the most part don't rely on the floating markers that are enabled by default, but can be disabled, which I did. The compass will still show the direction of your quest markers and I did find myself using that more than I'd like. The journal is very basic and even if you exhaust dialog options, you'll often not have enough information to go on. Sometimes it makes sense: the person giving you the job doesn't know the details either, but many times the quest-giver would know and has the kind of personality to share the information proactively... and just doesn't. This is par for the course for BGS titles.

Overall my experience has been very positive and I'll be playing for a long time to come, but I will definitely be modding a lot of things about it.

If you have a sense of curiosity and exploration, I cannot recommend this game enough. A true landmark game of this generation.
