In my experience, indie games that try to emulate AAA titles just don't measure up. They've got 100s(thousands?) of full time employees, and indie devs just have a few people; so you just end up with something that looks bad. Just my 2c.
If you're not talking about making borderlands in space, disregard everything I just said. The whole cel-shaded and angular asthetic tottaly could work, especially if you're going balls deep on it and just making it look insane.
Anyways, I definitely can produce some sparse and bleak soundscapes a la Mass Effect for background ambience. For the gun sounds, are you thinking of more lasery retro sounds, or a more contemporary asthetic? And as far as theme/menu songs, are you thinking more along the lines of dance music or film music?
