Considering it's his first game wouldn't the free option be a better idea? He doesn't know how far he will get with this project and by using unity there isn't a risk of wasting money on something.

I think source is written in C++ and it's quite a popular language for games. I'm not much of a programmer but I think the best thing to do is to look up tutorials on how to make simple games and go from there and maybe then try to make some simple modifications on the source engine. With level design just start making maps. I think a big thing with maps is being able to optimize it well. http://www.interlopers.net/ is a good resource for map tutorials on the source engine. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean like getting a permission to make a game under a certain franchise or getting a license to use a certain game engine?

I'm in the same boat as you. Not sure about universities but I think a good thing to do would be to build a portfolio of work and try to get involved with a indie game's sound or music to add to the portfolio
