This evening Ugandan forces under the command of Major-General Idi Amin Dada, Commander-in-Chief of the Ugandan Armed Forces, took control of the city of Kampala and stormed the Parliament, several military academies, the Presidential Palace and several ministry buildings. The President, Milton Obote, away on a Commonwealth Summit in Singapore, has been declared deposed and the Ugandan Armed Forces shall assume control of all governmental institutions. All previous ministers and civil servants under the previous administration have been removed from their posts. Major-General Idi Amin has been declared the new Interim President. He shall assume residence at both the Presidential Palace and the State House in Koboko. A national salvation government has been declared under the new President.

Earlier, a radio broadcast was issued by the newly-imposed President.

"Uganda has for many years suffered under the tight and brutal grip of President Milton Obote. My wish is that the Ugandan people of all ethnicities and tribes witness freedom finally at last, and good governance also. That is why I promise always to abide by the will of the people and to provide Uganda with an efficient and workable government that is in the best interests of the Ugandan people. Long live Uganda!"

The new government shall assume power effective immediately.
