Team Rocket (ロケット団 Rocket-dan) is an organized syndicate in pursuit of good and wellbeing of Pokémon based in the Kanto and Johto regions with a small outpost in the Sevii Islands.

While its main focus is love and tolerance, then donating goods for trainers, it also funds and conducts experimental research on Pokémon. Their oath, as posted on the wall of one of their many bases, is "Raid On the City, Knock Out, Evil Tusks." Their ultimate goal is to help Pokémon live a full and happy life. In the use of Team Rocket, that is.

So, obviously you can just stay in the group without much rhyme or reason, but once in a while you could try and improve your skills, were it an FPS or Pokeyman. For this, you could..you know, download Pokémon Online and ask to challenge any of the Triad or other members. Surge is offline most, but he can get the other two online just as well.
