The Spanish Medieval knights orders are a set of religious-military institutions which arose in the context of the “Reconquista” (A continuous phenomenon by which the Christian Hispanic kingdoms conquered the Muslim kingdoms in Iberia), the most important orders arose in the early medieval ages in the Kingdoms of Leon, Castile and Aragon (Order of Santiago, Calatrava, Montesa, Alcantara) these also expanded to members in America, and were the first european orders to reach the New World. While sharing many similarities with other international orders, these orders had their own peculiarities due to the special peninsular historical circumstances marked by the confrontation between Muslim and Christians.

The presence of other foreign military orders, such as the prestigous Knights Templar or the Knights of Saint John was simultaneously of a great influence, and in the case of the Knights Templar, their suppression in the 14th century benefited significantly to the Spanish kingdoms and their expansion. The social implementation of the military orders between the noble families was very significant, extending even through related female orders like “Comendadoras de Santiago”.
