关于 Regiment Blackwatch

History:

A premier Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army and one of the most famous fighting forces in the world, with a proud history and tradition of an organisation that has been soldiering for over 250 years, with the skills and professionalism of a front-line unit in a modern Army. The history of this regiment is unique and goes as far back as the Jacobite Rebellion in 1715. Trustworthy Highlanders were needed by the British Crown to prevent fighting between the clans, deer raiding and help enforce the ban on carrying weapons. Such Highlanders were to be found in the clans Campbell, Grant, Fraser and Munro. In addition, King George II authorised the forming of these men into a Regiment of the Line of the regular army under the leadership of the Earl of Crawford. The men were to be "natives of that country an none other to be taken". The regiment first saw action in the Battle of Fontenoy, where they gained great distinction although it was a British defeat. A French officer recorded "Highland Furies who rushed at us with more violence than ever did the sea driven by tempest".

The regiment, to be allocted the "42nd" numerical slot, saw action throughout the known world. India, Ceylon, the West Indies, the American War of Independence, and Alexandria - where they captured the colours of Napoleons Legion. For their performance the regiment were awarded the honour of carrying the Sphinx on its Colours and badge.

The 1st battalion saw action at the begining of the WWI, where they took part in the retreat from Mons. Heavy loses were incurred, such as in Mesopotamia against the Turks in 1916, and France in 1918. The regiment was instrumental in many battles and saw ferocious actoion. One Private Melvin won the VC for overcoming 9 Turks singlehanded. In September 1918 they helped the successful attack on the Hindenburg Line, Germanys last fortified trench system. Over 8000 members of the regiment lost their lives in the Great War.

From the most noble and couragous actions throughout WW2, the Korean War, and peacekeeping duties, the regiment remains a tribute to our armed forces. They were the last to leave Hong Kong in 1997 when the island was returned to China.
