“Allow B-Pharma to invest in your future.”

These words, and the smile from the pretty infomercial presenter are what marked the end of civilisation as we knew it.

The year was 2016, and B-Pharma, the world leaders in biotechnology had announced their progress into a treatment that would effectively slow the ageing process by up to 50%, dramatically increasing the life expectancy of those who used it. What’s more, they said, was that it was affordable, and the effects were hereditary, meaning that this innovation was to change the course of humanity forever. And it did.

The treatment was called ReGen. It was a retrovirus that slowed the rate of degradation and decay in all living bio matter, and it worked. Clinical trials had proven successful, and within a year, B-Pharma was ready to roll out its first wave of commercial treatment. It was during the first wave of commercial use that the issues became apparent. The problem with ReGen, it seemed, was that it worked a little too well.

When users of the ReGen drug did die, be it from an accident, illness, or something else that prematurely terminated the users life, the body didn’t decompose correctly even after termination of all nominal brain activity. To put it plainly, the human brain continued to operate in a limited capacity long after the death of the individual, albeit with only… primal requirements. Shortly after the point that should have been total brain-death, the cadavers would reanimate, seeking to feed on anything that moved. This, unfortunately, meant other human beings. One thing that we weren’t aware of, was that the ReGen retrovirus could be transferred through bodily fluid. This meant that those who were bitten also became infected. A swift death usually followed, and shortly after, reanimation.
This was how it went for the next few months. People died, people rose, and people fed, in turn killing more people. Within a matter of weeks, it was a pandemic, the world over, reports of outbreaks came back to us, and all we did was sink underground, waiting for the world to end. The military, the CDC, the UN, none of them were a match for the monster we’d created. Napalm, nuclear weapons, antivirals, quarantines, nothing could stand in its way.

As it transpired, there was a tiny percentage of the population who were immune to the virus. At development stage, these people were considered unfortunate, destined to live out a short lifespan while the rest of humanity were blessed with the gift of ReGen. How ironic that those people are going to outlive us all.

I have made the decision, now, to end my life. I was a part of the Research And Development team responsible for ReGen, and the weight of my own conscience is too much to bare. I write this now in the moments leading up to my own death. If this note is ever found, then I am sorry. I know that nothing I can say or do can make up for what I did, for what I was a part of. I can only hope that those who remain are strong enough to claim back the world from the dead and rebuild. I am afraid I am not strong, and I will never know.
