June 10, 2010 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces Mortal Kombat 9.

An early E3 announcement, Mortal Kombat 9 is on its way and it looks impressive! Its a return to the series roots, and Warner Brothers (the new owners of the MK IP) looks to be giving it the "Street Fighter 4" makeover. With a lot of the recent hype over Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 tournaments, perhaps now is the right time for this series to come back in fine form.

Could Evo 2011 be the first year to have Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters? Once these games are out, do your part and get out there to support these games!

- Gameplay is 2.5D like SF4
- Will have a meter used for EX moves (grants additional properties/damage/abilities to special moves, executed by performing the move as usual along with tapping the block button).
- When meter is full, an "X-Ray Move" can be used. If the attack connects, your opponent is hit with a flashy combo with X-ray special effects, as seen in the trailer (sounds similar to Supers/Ultras)
- New Tag Team mode similar to tag systems in Capcom Vs. games
- Confirmed characters: Scorpion, Mileena, Reptile, Sub Zero, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Nightwolf and Sektor. Roster "appears to be more than two dozen deep"
- "Classic character skins, downloadable fatalities and add-on arenas" all "appear to be under discussion" for DLC.
- Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade
Mode” or compete against another team online.


The first trailer looked sharp, and the new information released today is refreshing. Hopefully they know the difference between being inspired by SF4 and blatantly ripping it off, and make a solid tourney-worthy fighter while staying true to the series."
