Mako Rutledge lumbered to the edge of the cliff, propelled by tree trunk legs and seething misanthropy, where he suddenly drew up, heaving. There, above the shore, against a periwinkle sky, a flock of Mercys flitted like butterflies on the breeze. They dove and darted, joyfully, carefree and unbound from all worries and strife. They were living, the pure and innocent life of the unfettered. And Mako considered his own life, and the burden he carried, his hatred of humanity. Even his weapon of choice, his diabolical hook, was a tether, with which he reeled in his victims, to consume them in the blackness that was his soul. But the dance of the Mercys was a ray of light that pierced the blackness, and Mako knew what he must do. He waved to the Mercys, thankful for the gift they had given him, and flung himself off the side of the cliff. And as he plummeted, the final thought that he had, before his sweet release, was "♥♥♥♥, that was gay."
