WELCOME TO THE TRINARY STAR UNION!

The Trinary Star Union - or the TSU - was one of the largest active Space Engineers clans circa 2015-2016 and 2016-2018, peaking at ~250 members and having hosted its own survival servers, participated in faction wars on major servers in the multiplayer listing, taken part in roleplay, and anything else related to Space Engineers. Its Steam group is now being actively curated for nostalgic purposes, and should be considered defunct.

History

In 2015 rebelling within the Space Commando Corps, or SCC, the TSU saw early successes in communication and deployment, which led to the assimilation of SCC and other clans. TSU coordinated inter-clan collaboration, working with the likes of the CAS, GFSA, ESA, ISMC, ISB, LGN, USF, and RTF. The TSU was a voting member of the UPDR. Collaboration produced a lack of war, which resulted in rising tensions, leading to the emergence in 2016 of the CSA and DS-A as competing rump clans of the TSU. Reformed within the year, the TSU outlasted both forks. The organization gradually declined in activity alongside the drop in popularity of persistent, multi-server clans within Space Engineers multiplayer.

TSU Militia & TSU Fleet Spaceframe Approval

Our spaceframes will be subdivided into two categories: The TSU Militia and TSU Fleet. Militia vessels will primarily be responsible for border defense, territory administration, anti-piracy, planet-side operations, and fleet support. Fleet vessels are designed to establish deep space superiority, vaporize hostile forces, and subvert extinction-level threats.

TSU Fleet approval is incredibly rigorous. Fleet starships must perform at or near mathematical & geometric optimums for their intended role - which means that every block and every kilogram counts. Regardless of size, fleet ships must be able to operate at full efficiency with a crew of precisely one.

Perhaps most exotically, TSU fleet vessels must also be optimized for 100% weld completion from a single merge block, using the 3D printer of the Apotheosis or Eclipse for a single-axis weld. This means that every single block on the build must be attached on the correct face(s) to weld from a 3D printer, and that the ship’s dimensions in two axes cannot exceed the dimensions of the 3D printer.

TSU Militia approval is quite straightforward and permissive. Militia vessels need to demonstrate competence within their intended role(s), rather than approach the mathematical limits of what is possible in-game.

Here are some design criteria:

- If gravity drives are installed, they need to be torqueless or near-torqueless.
- Medical bays are encouraged for anything larger than a fighter
- Rotors and pistons, if present, need to be permanently locked.
- Self-repair projections are encouraged

For militia combat ships:

- Distributed & redundant power systems are required
- Gyros should be attached only to heavy armor, preferably facing outward from the center.
- Cargo systems should be as localized & decentralized as possible
- Conveyor-spam should be minimized as much as possible
- The bridge or cockpit should be deep inside the vessel
- Turret and weapon systems should be dual-layer self-repairing.
- Installing hydrogen afterburners, gravity drives, or both, is advisable
- Gravity shields are good
- Jump drives are great
- Planetary flight capability is not encouraged, unless the ship is designed solely for it
- Connectors take up less room than pressurized hangars for servicing fighters

Ease of welding is not a factor in militia vessel approval. However, the responsibility of welding a militia vessel will almost always fall solely to its creator - so streamlining that process is always going to be worthwhile.

Construction of fleet vessels will usually be prioritized above the construction of militia vessels, depending on the availability of materials.

Spaceship Design Contest - Flagships

We will be holding a spaceship design contest, to see who can build the best noncombatant deep space flagship. The design goal is fairly straightforward: Build a flagship elaborate enough to serve as a mobile home base to its crew.

This event will occur on 6/24/2017, at approximately 4 PM US central time.

Anyone can submit a ship of their choice - and additionally, anyone can judge the competition, including contestants. To maximize fairness & reduce the impact of favoritism, builds will remain anonymous until all judging scores have been recorded. Posting your ship to the workshop before the contest is not encouraged, but it will not disqualify you from competing.

The winner will receive a deluxe edition of Space Engineers via Steam gift (which is tradable, if you already have SE deluxe edition).

BUILD REQUIREMENTS:

- Vanilla, no modded blocks allowed
- At least 1 medbay
- Airlock
- Pressurizable interior space
- Accomodate a crew of ten or more.
- Must be mobile when in zero-g.

BUILD RESTRICTIONS

- 25 million kilogram mass limit
- 30,000 block limit
- Large grid
- Subgrid parts prohibited

The judges will rank each starship, from first place to last place, in multiple categories. For example, a starship might receive 4th place for external aesthetics, 2nd place for living spaces, and 3rd place for efficiency. Other judges may assign completely different rankings to the same ship.

The winner will be selected by a point system. For example, if 12 ships are submitted, then a ship that receives a 1st place ranking will receive 12 points, the 2nd place ship will receive 11 points, and so on. The points from all judges and all categories will be totalled to derive a winner.

Each category will have a priority multiplier. For the purposes of this competition, some categories are more important than others. If a category has a multipler of 1.5, then the 1st place ship out of 12 ships would actually receive 18 points.

This system allows us to use any number of ships and judges, and vastly reduces the probability of a tie.

EXTERNAL AESTHETICS (Priority Multiplier: 1.4)
This is how cool the overall spaceframe looks. Is the spaceship interesting and visually pleasing, or vomit-inducingly awful?

EXTERNAL DETAIL (Priority Multiplier: 1.1)
Slightly different from external aesthetics, this is a measure of how detailed the exterior of the ship is. Ships can be highly detailed but visually displeasing, or cool-looking but relatively featureless.

INTERNAL AESTHETICS (Priority Multiplier: 1.3)
This is how cool the interior looks. Is the interior eyecandy, or eye-cancer?

INTERNAL DETAIL (Priority Multiplier: 1.0)
Just as is the case with exterior design, detail and appeal may be similar, but they are not identical. Some interiors may be plain & very cool, while others may be exquisitely detailed but messy.

LIVING SPACES (Priority Multiplier: 1.5)
How well would this ship work as a permanent home for its crew? How luxurious are the accommodations? Does the crew have their own wide-screen TV's in their quarters, or do they have to hide behind a console to pee out of a hose in their EVA suit?

PRACTICAL FUNCTIONALITY (Priority Multiplier: 1.0)
Aside from a prestige symbol, how well does this build justify building? Can the flagship perform some useful function, aside from merely looking cool?

EFFICIENCY (Priority Multiplier: 1.1)
Yes, pressurized interiors are an often unnecessary expenditure of interior space, but is the build grotesquely inefficient? Does it have gargantuan empty spaces with no function, huge reactors with nothing to power, disconnected inventory, or cargo spaces too vast to ever fill up?

MATERIAL COST (Priority Multiplier: 1.2)
Does the ship require a half-billion thruster components and superconductors, or is its bill of materials reasonable & practical? We will use SE toolbox to present a list of the components & ingots necessary to construct each ship.

If anyone has a vanilla warship in the 8-20 mil kg range (or one that can deal with a ship that large), i would very much appreciate it if you could PM me. I'm hoping to better optomise a new heavy frigate via combat testing before it joins the fleet

Most immediately on my list of things to do is a fully updated and polished Dragonstar, and the associated stealth carrier to jump, construct, service, and salvage them. Depending on how it does in our upcoming combat competition, it might become one of our primary ships.
