Yes, sadly crossplay is made through EOS.
People say that Steam release is DRM-Free. But it's important to check, if game phones or loads EOS by default.

EOS is now fully optional. You need to explicitly select EOS in the game's launch menu in order for EOS components to launch.

First developer, who handled EOS addition properly.
