Las SS (Schutzstaffel; escuadrones de protección) eran originalmente una organización paramilitar que brindaba seguridad al Partido Nazi.

Bajo el liderazgo de Heinrich Himmler, las SS se ampliaron para convertirse en un estado virtual dentro del estado de la Alemania nazi: eran responsables de hacer cumplir las políticas raciales nazis, de identificar y de perseguir a los opositores políticos y de otro tipo del régimen nazi.
