Syfy does it again, they have cancelled the last series I followed on the network.

Syfy Channel won’t bring back Sanctuary for a fifth season, the network confirmed today.

“We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series,” Mark Stern, Syfy’s President of Original Content, told The Hollywood Reporter. “In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques — including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology — and Emmy-nominated visual effects.”

Sanctuary began in 2007 as a privately-funded, limited run Web series before being picked up by Syfy in 2008.

Season Four concluded in December and, with no immediate pick-up, the cast and crew have begun work on other projects. Executive producer and series star Amanda Tapping is currently directing for the new series Primeval: New World, which also has Sanctuary‘s Martin Wood on board as a series producer and director.

Series creator Damian Kindler is writing a Universal Soldier television pilot (story), and co-star Christopher Heyerdahl (“John Druitt,” “Bigfoot”) has booked a recurring role on HBO’s True Blood, starting next month (story).

“To all the fans of @SanctuarySeries we love and adore you,” Tapping wrote on Twitter today. “Thank you for the love and support. Now to the long dark tea time of my soul.”

Tapping and Wood recently spoke candidly with GateWorld about the show’s uncertain renewal prospects, as well as their frustration over being moved to Monday nights last year. After a ratings free-fall of more than 40 percent, Syfy moved the show back to the post-wrestling time slot for what would be its final season. Season Four averaged 1.26 million viewers over 13 episodes last fall.

Sanctuary‘s place on the fall schedule will be filled by the third season of Haven, bumped back from its usual place on the summer schedule. Syfy has a number of scripted dramas in development, including Defiance and Rewind.

It´s a start!

Today it is one year since the cancellation of SGU.
Lets hope it will be back in 2 years, like Eli said!

It is has almost been a year since the cancellation of SGU (16 december 2010), where do you think the Destiny is now?

I think the Destiny has left the galaxy it was in, and is hoovering in the void between the galaxy's at the moment.
I also think Eli has repaired the pod, because he really is one of the most important carracters it would be a shame if he dies.

Just how would that Stargate Atlantis movie have played out? Writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi described the script’s opening scenes to readers on his blog a few months ago (story). Now he’s offered up a few more details on the storyline that would have taken the city of the Ancients back to the Pegasus Galaxy.

Mallozzi previously revealed that Stargate: Extinction would have opened with Atlantis relocated from its landing site in the San Francisco Bay (“Enemy At the Gate”) to the far side of the Moon, away from prying eyes. But the Ancients programmed an automated self-destruct should the city ever be taken out of Pegasus — which activates, prompting the team to fire up the stardrive and make a mad dash home.

“It’s time to get the band back together,” Mallozzi continued, “and we check in with our various team members as they are called up and beamed away for the return journey: Teyla and her family, Keller, Beckett, Lorne, Zelenka and, of course, Sheppard and Ronon who are plucked away while receiving treatment at a local hospital following a barroom brawl (we went back and incorporated the scar actor Jason Momoa received following an incident near his L.A. home). Once everyone has assembled, McKay gives them the 411.

“Given the time constraints they face, they have to get back to Pegasus as quickly as possible — meaning they’ll have to use the wormhole drive again. Zelenka calculates that two jumps should do it.

“And they’re off. Sort of. The first jump ends up burning out the drive, rendering it useless and leaving them stranded with the countdown click ticking down. However, a scan of the surrounding plants turns up a habitable world within range. They go there seeking help and, instead, end up involved in a wild time-travel themed adventure in which Todd, the Wraith, turns out to be, simultaneously, their hugest threat and biggest ally.”

Stargate: Extinction was announced by MGM and Syfy Channel in 2008, and scripted by Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. Financial issues forced the studio to put the film on the back burner. After MGM passed through bankruptcy and took on new CEOs at the end of 2010, hopes for Extinction were ended.

There are still hopes that the studio might allow a publisher to turn the script into a novel or comic book, but so far MGM hasn’t made any plans known — not even to Mallozzi. Stay tuned to GateWorld for any future developments.
