ANTI ACTA - Show your support for a free internet

Welcome friends. This is a group created in support of not only a free internet, but indeed a free world. If this victory of the oppressive is allowed to happen, where will it be forced to stop? Indeed, will it be forced to stop at all, or will the citizens of the world be steamrolled by surveilling organizations put in place by the governments created to protect them? This is a temporary group. Its purpose is one and one only: to create this stop. If it doesn't stop here, where will it? Will the citizens of our nations, collectively or individually, allow themselves to be trampled and oppressed by the enforcement? Will oppression and tyranny rain supreme, under laws and bills passed by elected or even unelected officials who do not understand the repercussions, the consequences, the ripples caused by what they so willfully and so cheerfully sign into law?

There was a domestic victory won with SOPA and PIPA. These bills, however, pale in comparison to what they attempt. In the shadow of the failed propositions, while our informed citizens rejoice at our victory, they bring forth a new tyrant: ACTA.

ACTA stands for Anti-Counterfitting Trade Agreement. This bill is best explained by this video:

I strongly encourage you to at least watch the video. It gives a better understanding of what ACTA is than I could ever provide in this short text.

The bill has already been signed by the United States and Canada. European nations vote this coming Thursday, January 26th, 2012.

Ladies, gentlemen... this could be the end of a free Internet, even a free WORLD. It is imperitive that this bill, and others like it, are stopped.

This group was created for one purpose, like I stated. This purpose is to oppose and bring to a halt the mad, derailed train this internationally cooperating government has become. Stop ACTA.

EU HAS SIGNED THE BILL.

All that's standing in the way of it passing now is the European Parliament.

Keep the bill in mind as you use the internet today.

Keep the bill in mind when you use any patented material. As per the bill, if there is some kind of copyright violation, the authorities may legally take the ORIGINAL, as well as any copies. Consider how much that may delay releases and technology. Imagine if some vaccine or new medicine was copied somehow, and due to that, all copies and originals have to be confiscated. Even if they get these originals back, tests will have been run on them, and it will be long after the time they were orignally taken, greatly delaying the release of the product.

They also give authorities the right to disclose your personal information if they even ASSUME that you are guilty of piracy. This is before any proof, if they accuse you of piracy in any way, without actually confirming that you've done anything, they may disclose your private information.

There are many other very scary regulations in the bill, including one that allows the local government of an area to create its own enforcement policy (Insert SOPA/PIPA here) to deal with copyright violations. So essentially, with the passing of this bill, SOPA and PIPA pass as well. Not to mention all of the other nasty stuff that will happen.

Just keep all of that in mind today while you go about your daily routine. If you've been sitting around thinking it won't effect you, think again.

Bill officially comes into effect on June 2012 if Parliament gets enough people who favor it.

Mr. ♥♥♥♥, y u no think? We created this group to raise awareness. Clearly, through posts like yours, you can see how uninformed people are. The bill hasn't passed, we've simply signed it. It means that when it does pass, we'll agree to follow it. Signing a bill means nothing until the bill goes into effect.

"ARTICLE 41: WITHDRAWAL
A Party may withdraw from this Agreement by means of a written notification to the Depositary. The withdrawal shall take effect 180 days after the Depositary receives the notification." - quoted from the bill itself.

ACTA has a withdraw plan. If a country sends in a resignation, they can withdraw from the bill after 180 days. Besides, at this point we're fighting more for Europe and others who haven't already signed the bill yet.
