Trying to finally get this thing going.

Long term, massive Risk style Civilization V game. Turns are 24 hours a piece, requiring players to only check in a few times a week.

Turn Timer and Missing Turn
Turn Timer
Firstly, the turn timer... I'm not 100% on this but I believe that it is a situation where we each take our turns simultaneously as far as turn number is concerned, however, we also each have a running 24 hour timer after the last time we completed our turn. It starts after an individual player completes their turn, not when the "All Players" turn number cycles. The timer on the screen, however, only shows the longest current timer. Why they did this? I have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue. It seems to be consistent with what we've seen so far though. So it may continue to jump around randomly but it really isn't hurting much of anything other than pace of play a bit and we can manage that.

The Missing Turn
So, after we started noticing the weird timer issues, I restarted the server thinking it might help fix them. As it turns out, when you reload the game from an autosave, the system has to force a "Resync" and resave. This Resync save auto-ends everyone's turn. So! When I restarted the server turn 37 was ended prematurely. The result was that everyone's progress on buildings, science, culture, etc were all cycled and no one lost any real production. However, it also meant no one was able to move any of their strategic units during that turn.

So basically, that happened again this morning. I completed my turn 43 this morning and since I was the last person to take it, I took the opportunity to restart the server again. The server moved to turn 44 at the end of my turn like it should have. The server autosaved like normal and I restarted the server. When I loaded the save for turn 44, it loaded as normal but when I logged in, it immediately ended turn 44 and moved to turn 45 (essentially skipping 44). I checked the autosaves and there was a new one called resync for turn 45. I tried reloading the save for turn 44 but no luck, it did the same thing.

So the good news is, I believe I've figured out what happened and I can hopefully prevent it from happening again. The bad news is that we need to take turn 43 over again so you'll need to repeat what you did yesterday, unfortunately. I was planning on polling everyone on if they just wanted to let it skip the turn but I've had someone report that the skipped turn would have resulted in them losing a Great Person which is a big enough of a problem that I think we need to just reload from yesterday. My apologies for that but I don't want anyone unfairly punished by something that was the server's fault. Hopefully we can avoid this in the future now that I think I know what happened. Let me know if anyone has any concerns about this.

Week 1 Summary
Launch
First and foremost, we have launched the game! We did not get anywhere close to the 100 turns I originally estimated but that's no big deal because the important thing is, everyone showed up and minus a couple hiccups, everyone got connected. So that is a big win in my book.


Crash
The server crashed briefly early Saturday morning and had to be reset. It autosaves each turn so it didn't seem to cause any issues with the exception that the turn timer is cycling later in the day right now. Its currently scheduled to complete Saturday's turn at about 10 am ET Sunday morning.


Barbarians Raids
Barbarians wrought havoc on several players. Multiple workers and settlers were kidnapped and dragged away to camps. Capital cities are being pillaged and a pressure for defense is the primary focus for many civilizations. Those who aren't feeling the pain of the barbarians are forming mercenary forces to help aid the civilizations in need for favors or profit.


Random Civilizations
The random civilization lottery has worked out very well, in my humble opinion. No one really got a civilization that they are particularly fond of or familiar with. This combined with the barbarian aggressiveness has really helped level the early game playing field between the more and less experienced players. That being said...


Player of the Week
Noah Burgher - hashtagsbyNoah - Noah has jumped to an early lead by winning the race for the Great Library. With his first world wonder in place, he was able to quickly jump to the Classical age long before anyone else. With only minor skirmishes so far with the barbarians, production on his capital city has been unhindered. He also recently made a declaration of friendship with Ian and is completing a deal with him to lend money to his war effort. Which brings me to...


Early Game Trading Tip
At this point so early in the game, we don't have a lot of trading options. You can trade Gold Per Turn, accept embassies in each other's capitals and you can trade luxury resources with any civilizations you have met. However, if you make a declaration of friendship with a civilization you've met it opens up the option to trade gold in a bulk sum. This can allow one player to trade a bulk sum of gold to another in return for a Gold Per Turn commitment with interest. If you aren't being raided by barbarians, offer a loan to your neighbor who is.

It looks like if everyone in the group is in for the game we'd have 6 players. We could throw in two computers, leave it at six and just go or try to find two more people. Thoughts anyone?

You have not missed it. I was sort of busy with wedding planning so I postponed trying to get things set up. I'm done now though and I'm also still game. Plus Civ has been on sale all the time lately so maybe we can snag a couple more players.

Yeah. I think there will be varying levels of xpacs so we'll just see what people wanna do once we have enough players.
