I've figured out a workflow to use real-world data. it's a little hectic but if rl provides the time for me to do so, I intend to get something set up using DEM data. The biggest issue seems to be finding the exact place I want and then hoping it scales right in game. Thus far, the locations that i've used are all a little too massive, so they don't get scaled right in game.

Once I manage to cough out a finalized map, i'll probably set up some instructions online. My rough workflow is basically

DEM>MicroDem>Set as elevation map>photoshop>dull the contrast>worldmachine>export color map,flowmap,heightmap. Adjust color map to your liking. Import heightmap to CE3, import terrain texture (color map).

The guy does a bit more back and forth between programs than you'll need to make a snow map, but the idea is there. it's worth a watch.
