Recently on October 19th of this year, the Swedish Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning had proposed that the Swedish wolf population should be reduced to only 180 individuals. That's about half of the swedish wolf population.The government's own investigation in April of 2012 had proposed an increase of the wolf population to 450 individuals.Conservation organizations WWF Sweden, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and the Swedish Carnivore Association all agree that a decimation of the population would seriously endanger the population. Major areas of concern are a higher vulnerability to diseases, poaching, traffic accidents, nativity variation and other random events.The decision was kept secret from the organizations mentioned above as well as the Swedish Wolf Committee. They only became aware of it when the public announcement was made by the Swedish Environment Minister, Lena Ek. The consensus of these organizations is for the Minister to reconsider and heed the scientific reports on the future well-being of the Swedish wolf population.
