Plans for the future

Hey guys, long time no see! Over the past year a lot has changed in my life, from becoming a professional videographer and photographer (thanks a huge part to your viewership and support) to graduating college etc that has made me a very busy moose. BUT I am cautiously optimistic that starting in January I will have enough time, money, and incredibly expensive camera equipment from work to start seriously creating YouTube content again. However a lot is going to change, basically everything and hopefully for the better so let’s go over the details on how things are going to change up.


Firstly, last year I launched Moose Meals cooking and snack review channel and while I only did it for a short time, I enjoyed it immensely. The one thing I wasn’t happy with was the camera quality, while my little EOS M is great for taking pictures, it really underperforms when recording video in terms of quality. Which sucks because that’s why I bought it. However now for work we are getting an OSMO+ which is a fantastic camera and gimble combo capable of shooting 4k video completely stabilized and easily controllable.


If you don’t care about camera stuff you can skip this part but this is hugely important because when I tried to film cooking videos with my EOS M, it had to be on the tripod and once on the tripod couldn’t be moved much at all. Which is bad for the style of cooking videos I was doing because I had to many times move quickly between shots and showing many different angles in a span of a few minutes as I was doing things. Now in addition to being able to be mounted to a tripod I can handhold the unit as well as make minor adjustments using the motorized camera head without having to completely redo the setup.


But this is a gaming channel so what about the original Mooseman Gaming channel? Well that’s a bit more complicated. The landscape of youtube and internet video in general has changed significantly over the past 3-4 years and when I designed shows like Play Wait or Avoid and Gaming News Weekly they were designed for both that landscape and for what I was interested in at the time. When I started taking PWA seriously I had NOTHING to do outside of college work which required minimal effort. But now the time spent adequately reviewing a game (which is around 40 hours minimum including reviewing, editing, recording, etc) isn’t possible for me to do especially when reviews are incredibly time sensitive. The reviews would be half assed and rushed, as well as either costing me a fortune or limiting me to games I receive via free review key which, 95% of the time are not necessarily bad but really won’t bring in any views unless the game becomes really popular.


So instead of doing weekly videos that are good but shorter and more quickly put together, I want to start doing long form, more produced videos which will be much more enjoyable to watch beyond the information they provide. One of the problems with PWA was that, while they were extremely informative if you were looking to buy a game, they weren’t necessarily fun to watch. I want to mix the two together, with the videos being still video game commentary but with more fun sections including live action segments (something I couldn’t do before without the new camera tech). If you are looking for references think of EZ Scape mixed with JonTron where the video will still be informative and opinionated, but a bit more light hearted and with some level of entertainment value beyond the subject matter at hand. For instance the first video in planning (title tentative) is Top 10 “Feel Good” Games but themed similarly to Mr. Rogers that may or may not involve Mooseman in old sweaters and with gray hair. It sounds a bit silly compared to the ultra serious nature of my other videos, but I’m going to have to ask you to trust in the fact that my skills in videography have greatly improved and if it does see the light of YouTube it will be a greatly enjoyable change in how I do videos.
So schedule wise this is how it is going to look:


1-3 Moosemeals videos each week, focusing heavily on the cooking side and less so on the snack review side.

1 Mooseman Gaming video per month, but a much higher quality and enjoyable end product.


After I get my feet adequately wet I’ll begin talking about streams again but right now YouTube is going to be the singular focus with streaming being put on the back burner for a little while. As always I want to continue streaming, and if by some chance YouTube begins to become extremely successful (as in making $$$ successful, a steep 2 million view a month minimum) then I’ll consider a permanent return to streaming but as with PWA I just don’t have the time I used to to spend 4-5 hours a night streaming especially on top of the YouTube productions.


Also new logo! I have an artist now that will be making stuff for me consistently (@birdybear64 on twitter) so expect some actually decent merchandise and art as we get things rolling. Hope everyone had a great 2017, hopefully you’ll be seeing a lot more of me in 2018!!
