Founded in 48 BC by the Galatian king Deiotarus, the 22th legion played a part in the Pontic wars against Mithridates VI of Pontus, aka the poison king. At this time the legion had 12000 infantry and 2000 cavalry, 3 times the size of a normal legion! In 47 BC, the legion fought with the VI and two other legions in the battle of Zela, one of Caesars greatest victory's. Wich after this battle told the famous quote: Veni, Vidi, Vici. After the civil war it was one of the most importent legions in the east of the Empire, until it was probably destroyed during the Bar-Kochba rebellion in 132-136 AD.
