A good way to make it happen is offer to save some of the cost yourself. That's what the woman who I employ to take me shopping etc does with her son. He saves up for computer bits, then asks his mother and father to chip in for the bulk of it. He always does it just before an exam and they say we will if you get A's and A*'s :)
(which he always gets).
