Hmm, not sure how I missed this so many times. I've investigated and it looks a lot like a gimbal lock issue, which is a problem inherent to the SMD format. The problem can be visualised with the graph editor:

That line should be unbroken and somewhere near the middle of the Y axis.

There may be a way to fix this by fiddling with the imported rotation values as they are read from the SMD. But I have a workaround too: import the animation onto a new armature, then delete that armature and apply the action to the original import. That seems to work just fine for the sample file that I downloaded (die_chest.smd).

The exporter should be able to copy with models of any size, regardless of whether the engine will compile them. The errors should be fixable, I will investigate!

Looks like a corrupt installation. Try removing the tools from Preferences > Add-Ons and using Blender's UI to reinstall the zip file you downloaded.

You could do that, or point the tools to the file and edit it externally. I hadn't considered the use case of tweaking an existing model but it seems like a good idea. Extracting the controller block from the file you have selected would be a good addition.

Just inside one DMX file.

".smd.dmx" doesn't look right. Check whether the file exists and rename it, or change the QC, as appropriate.

Selecting a DMX file causes the flex controllers of that file to be inserted into your exported DMX file. It won't change anything in Blender. The imported controllers need to line up with the names of the shape keys on your model for the compiler to do anything.

The Insert command being broken is a pain, I'll have to investigate. It's only a utility that inserts a GUID into the text block though, nothing essential.

The file contains both an animation and a mesh, which AFAIK is not valid. This SMD probably can't be compiled.

Can you reconfigure the Wall Worm exporter to not do this?

I've never seen those options before. You had a modified version of the tools installed. If you can remember where it came from, that would be really helpful.
