A "bad premise" (or false premise) is an incorrect, untrue, or flawed assumption that forms the foundation of an argument, question, or story. Because the starting point is faulty, the resulting conclusion, argument, or plot is usually unsound, illogical, or unbelievable, even if the internal logic seems to follow.

Key Aspects of a Bad Premise:

- Logical Unsoundness: A logical argument requires both true premises and valid logic; a false premise makes the entire argument unsound.

- Examples in Arguments: "All birds can fly, and penguins can't fly, so penguins aren't birds" (The premise "all birds can fly" is false).
Examples in Questions: Asking "Why did you steal that car?" when the person did not steal a car (The premise "you stole the car" is false).

- Narrative/Writing Context: In storytelling, a bad premise might mean a premise that is inherently uninteresting, confusing, or too flimsy to support a story's plot.
- Hidden Assumptions: Bad premises are often implicit, requiring the listener to uncover the unstated, false belief.

To address a bad premise, one must challenge the underlying assumption rather than arguing about the conclusion.
