Austria-Hungary also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire 1867-1918. Was a monarchic union between the crowns of the Austrian Empire and Kingdom of Hungary.The union was a result of the Compromise of 1867 under which the Austrian House of Hasburg Agreed to share power. With a separate Hungarian Government both with their own parliament,although the two goverments were united by a Kaiser und König (Emperor-King).It was the successor to the Austrian Empire(1804-1867).The Habsburg dynasty ruled as Emperors of Austria over the western and northern half of the country and as Kings of Hungary and Croatia over the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia which enjoyed self-government and representation in joint affairs (principally foreign relations and defense).The empire was the second largest country in Europe by size (after the Russian Empire) and the third largest by population (after Russia and the German Empire).
"The Dual Monarchy" existed for 51 years until 1918.When it was dissolved following military defeat in The Great War(WW1).The two capitals of the Monarchy were Vienna for Austria and Budapest for Hungary.The Monarchy bore the full name"The Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and The Lands of the Crown of St. Stephen."
