The 17th Task Force was a clone regiment created during the Clone Wars shortly after the main battle on Geonosis. It was led by clone captain CT-4544, nicknamed Silva.
Commander Silva was given the order by Chancellor Palpatine himself to lead a team of hand-picked clones. The purpose of this newly created regiment was for clone troopers in battle to be provided with a quick response force that could carry out multiple tasks that ordinary clones would be unable to accomplish. In theory, the 17th would be dropped (usually by jet pack or gunship) onto the battlefield, take care of the problem, and move on to their next assignment as quickly and professionally as possible.
The 17th Task Force worked closely with the 501st during most of the Clone Wars. During the 501st's attack on the Jedi temple in Coruscant the 17th was officially adapted into the 501st. It then played a significant role in the destruction of the temple. Teams in the 17th Task Force also worked with the Coruscant Guard during the Clone Wars, providing extra security and backup in times of need.
The 17th Task Force did not have a Jedi general, but it was funded and trained by the Praetor family under the order of Chancellor Palpatine.
The 17th Task Force had a unique division (team) system. Each team had at least 400 clones, usually more. These are SOME of the divisions and the battalions they were assigned to:

-Karma Team: Assigned to provide support to the 501st Legion.
-Slayer Team: Assigned to provide support to the Coruscant Guard on Coruscant.
-Blackhole Team: Assigned to provide support to the 127th Star Corps.
-Lima Team: Assigned to provide support to the 41st Elite Corps on Kashyyyk.
-Qill Team: Assigned to a fleet of starships called the Praetor Fleet (named after the family that raised the 17th) that would travel to wherever they were needed the most.
-Golden Guard: An elite team of 400 guardsmen who were assigned protection missions on various high profile Republic personnel's starships. Their job was changed to escorting Imperial personnel after Order 66.
-Praetor Guard: Not considered a team by most of the 17th and resented for getting the easy job. Assigned to guarding the 17th's Kamino birth lab and helping with the training of the future Task Force clones.
Within each team there may be various squads, such as commando, ARC, and speeder bike squads, along with pilots, gunners, etc.
