First use of tomatoes as a sauce was not the Italians
Tomato sauce originated in the Aztec Empire (Mexico).

I did this once when I used to work in food service, the old bloody finger gag.
But did they use it for pizza?

No, they used peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for that.
Cap as always.

The plant originated in South America according to a simple search, so I imagine it was some tribe in that area. Not to say the Aztecs did not know of the plant, but it took a while for the trade networks to distribute goods.

If you think about it, the Italians thought the tomato plant was toxic until the 1600's and were using it as an ornamental. Now if tribes were to eat the stem or leaves, these parts of the tomato plant are bitter and toxic as the plant is a part of the Nightshade family.

Potatoes are originally South American. And I don't think there's a country in the world right now that don't use them. Possibly a much more important contribution than tomatoes.

Commercialized potatoes can be highly toxic as they absorb pesticides.

Everything can. Potatoes tend to be less susceptible to it than average, since they're underground, and have a thick skin. If you're concerned, peel them. Potatoes are an important stable, and represent the bottom end of most food markets. If potatoes disappeared, food costs globally would skyrocket much more than they would if tomatoes vanished.

That's the problem, they are more susceptible to pesticides because they are grown underground, similar to any tuber.
