traveling is the best way as you said, because reading about other cultures or watching documentaries or sampling their foods will only teach you so much. sometimes you are just needing to see these things first hand, to mingle with locals in their home countries and speak to them.

OP you are from France I think. Can you tell me if Paris smells like piss? I've heard that is one of the things that is a culture shock to people showing up.

I'm not as well-travelled as I'd like to be, so my knowledge of other cultures and countries is often theoretical. Stuff I've read in books, articles, some apolitical commentary and such. Better than listening to, I don't know, Kurt Caz walking around the most impoverished ethnic neighborhood in Paris to sell me a narrative (I did go to France a couple of times. It's a country with a lot of issues, but hardly the open air sewer these guys would have us believe).
