traveling is the best way as you said, because reading about other cultures or watching documentaries or sampling their foods will only teach you so much. sometimes you are just needing to see these things first hand, to mingle with locals in their home countries and speak to them.

Personally i've traveled and read a lot, then gaming a lot with peeps from other countries thought the internet, and nowadays i'm listening (and sometimes watching) peeps (that aren't talking about how bad other countries are out of their arse without any other proof than "believe me 'coz i said it") on youtube.
