It is a sad truth what Mark Twain said:
"It is easier to fool a human being than to convince them they have been fooled"
They were just doing equally inane things and interacting with the media of their time.
And they had the same fears and concerns we do. The Great Depression was on the horizon, the US was economically collapsing, WW1 had just decimated the male population of Europe and North America.
It's just the same ♥♥♥♥ on repeat.
What's funny is that we're landing almost exactly in the same spot exactly 100 years later, it's just now the US is the Wiemar Republic.
Regarding the video, I like the symbolism and surrealism. Although it tries more to evoke emotion through a series of images than to lead the viewer to a specific moral or philosophical conclusion, it clearly depicts a dystopian reality. This reality evokes a sense of something twisted and wrong, showing how corrupt and greedy officials and the media try to control people and their opinions, turning them into a gray mass. This video makes you think about what is real and what is fake.
