You don't see Gabe behaving like that. I bet he just sails around on his boats eating pork chops and meat pies.
Also Gabe’s yahts are in fact research vessels for deep sea exploration. Gabe is a founder of InkFish non profit organisation.

what do those have to do with that?
pubs still excist and if not you can open your own.
if you build it they come.
***even if you merely rent a room once a week, (or get one alocated by the city or a church when you ask them for a social meeting spot)
-> and buy a bunch of non matching cups on the cheap at the 2d hand stores.. or garage sales, a used ping pong and billiard table.. and an old sofa and few chairs... than advertise your "socialise evenings.. it can totally work.
people do desire socialise places.. if you build it they will come.
not everybody likes "disco's" aka they are to old to like that trans/dance/loud music or they never liked it to start...
and likewise cafe's often are way to full of people just drinking and having loud music (no chance to even have a normal conversation..
but well a classic pub.. with boardgamenight, pubquiznight, and why not a billiard or table tennis night... will be populair for well theres a lot of lonelyness.. make such a spot and they will flock to it.
maybe even have like 6 old pentium 4 pc's with windows 98 or xp on it in LAN.. with cdrom copies of all the classic pc games... so people can come, order a drink and have a lanparty with their friends oldstyle... or play some billiard.. or take a boardgame...
as for initial inventory.. no need for expensive beertabs.. just bottles from the supermarket and plastic or paper cups (or cheaper buy 2d hand mugs for like 5 or 10 cent each.. and just use those)... and than 50 cent per cup or something... basicly how student pubs are also run..
if you want to recreate a true english pub.. yeah those are moneysinks as those are costly to run... and often need you to have a lot of capital upfront to set up and eat those initial losses... but a smaller cornerpub.. making that profitable.. easy..
