PC boots to BIOS only a few days after installing new GPU
Hi all,

Bit perplexed here.

Recently upgraded from a gigabyte 2060s to a gigabyte 4070, boy those GPUs keep getting bigger.

Literally just pulled the old gpu out, put the new one in, attached the 2x8 to 1x16 pin connector to one PSU cable and plugged it into the gpu. (600W)

First start it went to BIOS, didnt change anything and restarted and it went to windows.

Played a few games on ultra for a bit, watched some stuff, went to bed. Did that for a few days, no problem.

Used shutdown8 last night to fall asleep to some wh40k lore like i have for the last 5 years and this morning when I went to start it up, straight to MSI BIOS. (Z790P)

Restarted, default settings, eufi to legacy, changing boot order, a bunch of different configs and no results.

Anytime i changed eufi to csm and restarted i’d get a screen of text prior to bios saying the card doesnt support vbios, then back to the BIOS.

Really scratching my head here, not sure why this is happening a few days after I installed it rather than immediately.

Anyone have any ideas on what could go wrong?
Havent pulled out the gpu yet but ready to throw the sink at it.

Cheers

I don't know the answer to your question, but one thing I noticed, moving from a 3000 to a 4000 GPU was that it was necessary to use DDU or there were problems when the PC went to sleep.

Is it important to uninstall previous drivers? Even though its the aame manufacturer and nvidia?

600 watt ps sounds a bit low........ what model is the power supply and
what model is the gpu. ?
have you been reading about msi z790 and intel issues lately ?
what cpu you using ?

if you switch back to the 2060 does issue go away ?

I'd always delete drivers and clean install new ones..

Try booting with one stick of ram with the new gpu, if you haven't already

When i was changing my card Windows automatically picked up the right driver . You should use UEFI not legacy . Reseat the card and check for loose cables . i had over 200 shutdowns becuase the bad technician put the cables so that they were touching the RAM . I moved the cables away and half a year no issue .

No issues with RAM, both sticks showing up in BIOS, hardware just sounds weird because this is happening a few days after some power gaming, I’ll check the cables, maybe just reseat everything.

PSU is a corsair 600W, its held up at high intensity with the new GPU, figured if something went wrong it would have happened running Helldivers on Ultra.

I5-12600K

I’ll look into the MSI and intel issues.

Might just pull the GPU and see if I can get into windows that way, noticed the BIOS build was from 2021, havent ever had to update it, could be time to flash it.

Havent done that, but computer was gaming fine with the new GPU for a few days already, not sure why its being moody this morning.

I don't know why, but pc's like to freak out and not reach the desktop after installing new hardware

You could also remove the gpu and plug it back it in, just in case it's not fully connected. I've also had this issue. Just a little less than being fully plugged in will cause the computer to not fully start up.

As for the ram thing, one stick at a time, and try every stick of ram you have, one at a time

Edit: based on how it was previously working, I would definitely try reseating it a few times

When you're in bios is the dedicated GPU detected? You update your bios?

Also yes, I think OP should do a BIOS update if they aren't on their latest version

In this case, if you have another device, you can download that update, name it accordingly, put it on a USB

Or if you don't have a spare computer, put the old gpu in, boot up, download the BIOS update and flash it from a USB

Update, pulled out the GPU, started the pc, got to BIOS fine, same issues as in the OP. So not a GPU issue?

I'm starting to think power supply issue, or the motherboard isn't properly grounded. Cpu isn't overheating and the psu is providing enough power?

Dont think so, stress tested the GPU pretty good beforehand, had zero issue with power or temps. Grounding hasnt been an issue either.

Can you try a restore point? I know that's not a fun option, but we could rule that out if it doesn't work.

Sometimes there are windows updates that just prevent a pc from posting. Is there a way you can start in safe mode and then download the specific gpu drivers?

If you have an NVMe drive try it in a different slot on the motherboard and or removing it then see if it boots normally (if it is not your OS drive) and or remove it and just run from a normal 2.5" SSD via SATA, could be the PCIe lanes or such that are conflicting?
