external monitor only shows 60hz in game (valorant and cs2) on hdmi 1.4 laptop
hi, i need help regarding my laptop hdmi's output and external monitor refresh rate.

i'm using asus vivobook pro 14 oled (M3400Q) with AMD ryzen 7 5800h and radeon integrated graphics. my laptop is 90hz and i just bought a 240hz msi monitor. the monitor supports hdmi 2.0 and display port, but my laptop only has hdmi 1.4 port.

the problem is:
when i play games using external monitor, windows gives me refresh rate options from 50hz to 240hz, but valorant and cs2 only shows 60hz in game refresh rate options. i already set the 240hz in windows setting and update the amd software: adrenaline options. i'm using hdmi 2.0 cable that came with the monitor. but when i'm not using external monitor (using my laptop monitor), valorant and cs2 can shows 90hz in game refresh rate.

here's something interesting:
a friend of mine with similar setup (laptop and monitor) can get 120 hz refresh rate options in game, even though his laptop is 60hz. the only difference is that his laptop uses a different gpu (intel).

i wonder is the hdmi 1.4 port on my amd laptop limit the refresh rate to 60hz on 1080p or should it still be capable of outputting at least 90hz/120hz on 1080p?

if there are any settings/configuration that i should try, i'd really appreciate some help. i've been struggling this for couple of weeks.

thank you!

Those games can't probably see full EDID, but maybe windows does for other games.

Getting USB-C > displayport 1.4 cable could allow you to just bypass HDMI..
I'm pretty sure there's a 3.2 Gen 1 type-C port on your laptop.

If you don't have money to spend, probably try updating AMD drivers.

There's more ways like editing the monitors EDID to try and 'force' stuff, but that's way too much effort, that adapter is a way better solution me thinks.

Edit : also, do you have different resolutions for each desktop? a mismatch will probably also influence the refresh rate, vega GPU's set the default FPS to 60 I think in your AMD drivers.
